As we prepare to embark on our #Artemis I uncrewed lunar mission, we have a message for the Moon: good night 🌕 Watch as astronaut Thomas Marshburn (@astromarshburn ) reads out loud from the children’s book, Goodnight Moon, from aboard the International Space Station (@ISS ). Soon we will be saying good night in person! This video was featured in a “Read Along, Draw Along” event hosted by Crayola and HarperKids to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the book’s publication. "We came all this way to explore the Moon, and the most important thing is that we discovered the Earth." In December of 1968, the crew of Apollo 8 became the first people to leave our home planet and travel to another body in space. But as astronauts Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders all later recalled, the most important thing they discovered was Earth. Using photo mosaics and elevation data from Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), this video commemorates Apollo 8's historic flight by recreating the moment when the crew first saw and photographed the Earth rising from behind the Moon. Narrator Andrew Chaikin, author of A Man on the Moon, sets the scene for a three-minute visualization of the view from both inside and outside the spacecraft accompanied by the onboard audio of the astronauts. The visualization draws on numerous historical sources, including the actual cloud pattern on Earth from the ESSA-7 satellite and dozens of photographs taken by Apollo 8, and it reveals new, historically significant information about the Earthrise photographs. It has not been widely known, for example, that the spacecraft was rolling when the photos were taken, and that it was this roll that brought the Earth into view. The visualization establishes the precise timing of the roll and identifies which window each photograph was taken from. Twin solid rocket boosters that will produce a combined 7.2 million pounds (~3.3 million kg) of thrust at liftoff, a towering core stage, and the only human-rated spacecraft in the world capable of deep-space travel – together, @NASA ’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and Orion spacecraft stand ready to usher in a new chapter of exploration. Now fully assembled at @NASAKennedy Space Center in Florida, SLS and Orion will soon roll to the launch pad for testing. #Artemis I will be a test flight for future crewed missions to the Moon. We are going. 🚀 #MegaMoonRocket #Launch #LunarMission #Rocket #STEM #SpaceLaunchSystem #Orion #Launchpad

For every generation, the Moon has been a beacon. For many across NASA and around the world, it has been calling to us. @NASA ’s #Artemis I mission, targeted to launch February 2022, will forge a new path to the Moon, charting a course for a new, diverse generation of explorers. We’ll develop the cutting-edge technology we'll need to venture even farther – to Mars and beyond. The Artemis I rocket and spacecraft are now combined and undergoing final testing at @NASAKennedy Space Center in Florida, where it will soon launch on the first in a series of increasingly ambitious missions. Thanks to the daily efforts of NASA and its international and industry team members, our dreams are poised to take flight. We are going. You won’t find penguins at this South Pole 🐧 This visualization compresses three months (a little over three lunar days into two minutes), and shows the unusual motions of the Earth and Sun as viewed from the South Pole of the Moon. The virtual camera is on the rim of the Shackleton Crater—a potential #Artemis lunar landing location. At the Moon’s South Pole, the Sun glides around the horizon, never more than 1.5 degrees above or below it. This perpetually low Sun angle produces extremely long shadows that rotate across the rugged lunar terrain. Credit: NASA's Scientific Visualization Studio #NASA #Moon #lunarsurface #MoonLovers
