Today, Wild Up — the "equally euphoric and daring" (NPR Music) Los Angeles contemporary music ensemble — released 'Julius Eastman Vol. 4: The Holy Presence' via New Amsterdam Records. Julius Eastman was young, gay, and Black at a time when it was even more difficult to be young, gay, and Black. He swerved through academia, discos, Europe, Carnegie Hall, and the downtown experimental music scene. And in 1990, at age 49, Eastman died in Buffalo, New York, less than a decade after the New York City Sheriff’s Department threw his scores, belongings, and ephemera into the East Village snow. Wild Up’s Eastman anthology represents a departure for New Amsterdam Records, which, until Femenine and Joy Boy, had exclusively released new music by active, living composers. But Eastman is a special case, a composer whose music shines like a beacon to today’s musical creators. Any term used to characterize today’s musical landscape — ”genre-fluid,” or the like — was anticipated by Eastman decades before; yet he was punished for being ahead of his time, both in the treatment of his music and, tragically, his person. Eastman’s music flowed freely from, and through, his myriad influences, and was terribly served by the musical infrastructure of his day. (At the time of his death, it took some eight months for a newspaper, any newspaper, to run his obituary). It makes sense, then, for Wild Up’s Eastman anthology to arrive on New Amsterdam Records, a sort of loving backward embrace of a musical torchbearer to 21st-century composers. You can enjoy an album release party tonight, featuring Wild Up’s cellist and Eastman scholar Seth Parker Woods playing his new version of the title piece for cello and electronics in Beverly Hills. Before you head out, listen to and get your copy of 'The Holy Presence', by Wild Up, at the link in bio. #newamrecords #juliuseastman #wildup #theholypresence

Peni Candra Rini (she/her), the Indonesian composer and performer known best for her classical and experimental fusion of Javanese styles, released the new single "Jenang Gula", from her upcoming album, Wulansih (July 12, 2024), via New Amsterdam Records. "'Jenang Gula’ is a message to all lovers not to forget that the beloved accompanies you to the door of any success,” says Rini, as she drops the listener into a beautifully paced, rhythmically driving, and tonally rich setting of lyrics by the Indonesian artist Andjar Any. The sound world is colored by Gamelan influenced guitars, percussive cello, synthesizer, and Rini’s crystal clear voice. "Jenang Gula" features Peni Candra Rini on voice, Andy McGraw on cello, John Priestley and Shahzad Ismaily on guitars, and Curt Sydnor on synthesizer. @darian.donovan.thomas (he/him), the composer, multi-instrumentalist, and interdisciplinary artist, announced his debut album, A Room With Many Doors: Night (August 2, 2024). It is a collection of songs that morph between hyperpop, noise, and ambient palettes to be released via New Amsterdam Records.  The news comes accompanied by the single, "Volver, Volver" — a textural, synth-drenched, and ambient reimagining of the classic Mexican ranchera by Fernando Maldonado — featuring a yearning trombone solo by the Grammy Award-winning Kalia Vandever. “Think of the person you have loved the most and lost. Imagine you are calling to them.” He shares, “I don’t know if this is a time for poetry. I don’t know how to do my purpose correctly in the face of the Palestinian genocide or the atrocities happening around the world in all this political chaos.  All I know is that I create, share information, discuss, march, create, love, argue, get enraged, meet friends at protests, work, and have heartbreak - Personal heartbreak. Global heartbreak. None of it is equivalent, but it is all simultaneous -  And I create. And above all: try to give.  I started creating and tending to something two years ago, and it's blooming now.  I want to give it to you.  I hope it brings you whatever you need as we figure out our next steps for a free Palestine.  A free Congo.  A free Sudan.  There’s so much to know and to do - it’s difficult. I believe in us.  This song has been there for me in heavy times.  Now, this song is here for you when you need it.  From our swords, let flowers bloom." - Darian Donovan Thomas  Listen to “Volver, Volver” by checking out the links in our profile.

As Darian Donovan Thomas releases "Flirting" today, his second single from ARWMD, he shares how he's gone "through yet another door of heartbreak, and will leave through a door marked Joy.” A Room With Many Doors (August 2nd, 2024) is a dizzying, kaleidoscopic, and epic narrative journey of self discovery that meets the listener at the end of a series of “experiments in heartbreak”. The songs on ARWMD explore questions of introspection (“what do we want to return to? Do we want to return to one person in particular, or do we want to return to an older version of self? A more stable self?”) from multiple angles. Darian's virtuosic sense of scale and texture, as well as his lyrical vulnerability make ARWMD a record that invites multiple listens and explorations. He is joined by an impressive cast of collaborators including: Alfredo Colón, Ben Chapoteau-Katz, Kalia Vandever, Taja Cheek (L’Rain), and Phong Tran. New Episode Alert 🚨 Episode 4 of Reverberations centers on Wild Up, the Los Angeles-based chamber orchestra, and their upcoming album 'Julius Eastman Vol. 4: The Holy Presence.' 'The Holy Presence' is the fourth in an ongoing series of releases by Wild Up celebrating the work of composer Julius Eastman, who passed away in 1990. Host Majel Connery speaks to Christopher Rountree, founder, conductor and creative director of Wild Up, and two of the soloists who helped shape the volume: bass-baritone Davóne Tines and cellist Seth Parker Woods. Their conversation ranges from the inspiration behind this multi-volume project to an exploration of what the “Holy Presence” entailed for Eastman, and what it should mean for us. @darian.donovan.thomas_ !!re!!_039; upcoming record, A Room With Many Doors, picks up at the end of heartbreak and the beginning of self-assessment. Darian explains, “I’m trying to make a place for myself where I can be honest with myself (safe space), while remembering where I come from, and the people that have been around me. This place started as family, and through time became the friends I made throughout my career. We get into these different heartbreaks – different things that at the time seemed world ending, but now are laughable — and ask ourselves, "What actually hurt?"" “Poignancy and joy are the hallmarks of this very fine debut." - @allaboutjazznearyou Mazz Swift (they/them)has released their debut solo album, 'The 10000 Things: PRAISE SONGS for the iRiligious,' via New Amsterdam Records. The Work Songs and Spirituals of the enslaved people that Swift uses as jumping-off points for improvisation and composition serve to connect with their musical ancestors, creating a work that lives in the present moment while acknowledging the past and pushing their sonic palette towards the future. As shared in their episode of @reverberationspodcast , this record touches on many dualities: spirituality for the irreligious; connection and disconnection with the past; and training and un-training virtuosity. You can find 'The 10000 Things: PRAISE SONGS for the iRiligious' at the link in our bio and your favorite streaming platform. #newamrecords #releasefriday #mazzswift #the10000things #praisesongs #neuroemergent #newamsterdamrecords
