Heading to Skomer Island this summer? Photographer Dom Reardon (@dom_reardon_photo ) shares some fantastic tips for photographing the well-loved puffin: TIMING For a silhouetted or glowy shot, you want nice soft, golden light. The best time for this is 20 minutes after sunrise or 20 minutes before sunset. COMPOSITION Get low! Getting on the same level as the bird creates a more intimate composition, especially if you can get eye contact. This also means that the backdrop in your image will be further away than if you shoot towards the floor, giving you that smooth out-of-focus background. If you want the bird to appear 'powerful' or 'majestic', try getting a little lower than it so you're looking up at it, to create a sense of power and authority in your image. SETTINGS The lighting changes fast during the first and last hour of the day. I almost always use manual mode with Auto ISO when shooting wildlife, so I don't have to worry about changing my ISO as the light changes. However sometimes auto ISO can get it wrong in a high contrast situation. The beauty of a mirrorless camera like the Z8 is you can see your exposure before taking the picture, so you know how it's going to come out. When looking into the sun, lower your exposure compensation, especially if going for a silhouette. I think my exposure compensation was set to around -2.0 for those! This tells your camera to expose for the highlights and not the shadows. Just keep an eye on your auto ISO in the viewfinder; if it's getting below 100, you can increase your shutter speed, and vice versa if it's getting too high. BONUS TIP You don’t always need a tripod for 3 reasons: 1. You can't just drop to the floor or quickly move your composition if you want a different background. 2. It's an extra thing to carry. You really want both hands on your telephoto lens and camera, so you can react quickly to any movement. 3. If poor lighting means you need a tripod to obtain a sharp image, then the image isn't going to look great anyway because the light is poor. It will just look flat and lifeless. The lighting really does make an image! 📸: @dom_reardon_photo with Nikon Z8 + NIKKOR Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR

Last year, alongside our founding partner Nikon, we followed Nikon Creators Lara and George to Switzerland to learn about the elusive Eurasian lynx. In The Missing Lynx, Lara and George meet an NGO working to restore the Swiss lynx population, and other experts across Europe dedicated to bringing the lynx back from extinction. Now, there’s cause for celebration: the Iberian lynx, native to Spain and Portugal, has thrived as a result of conservation programmes, from just 62 lynx in 2001 to over 2000 now. Protecting the natural world and its inhabitants really does work. 🎥 Watch The Missing Lynx on WaterBear now, brought to you in partnership with Nikon.

Nikon photographer Jessica Kotte (@bluesummerbird ) was in Tokyo for the first time in March 2023 and not only took breathtakingly beautiful photos of the city, but also gives us her best tips for the next photo trip to Japan's capital: Take advantage of the jet lag for early mornings and catch the warm, atmospheric light - Tokyo is amazingly quiet and different at 4:30 am. On rainy days, head to Shinjuku: the glowing billboards reflect perfectly on the wet streets. With a lightweight lens and low focal length (e.g. 26mm or 35mm) you can effortlessly stroll through the alleys and capture life"🎌. The Nikon Z30 Vlogging Kit was the perfect companion for the photographer in her compact camera backpack to capture high-quality videos on the go. Jessica says: "My photos were spontaneous, Tokyo offers countless motifs off the beaten track - always keep your eyes open!" #nikoncreators #tokyo #japan #tokyophotography #photography #cityscapes #japantravel #travelphotographer #whenintokyo #nikonz30 #travelvloggers
