Melissa Foster never imagined moving back into Shepard Hall after completing her undergrad and master’s degrees. But six years ago, that’s exactly what happened. As faculty-in-residence, Foster is also a mentor, bridge builder and away-from-home parent. “The fact that these 18-year-olds invite me into their world and let me be a part of their lives and college experience—I love it,” says Foster. A new @nu_library exhibition, timed for the Juneteenth holiday, showcases rarely seen original documents related to Frederick Douglass's enslavement and later freedom. The exhibition's title, "Freedom for Everyone," is a quote from Opal Lee—a Texas-based activist and educator known as "the grandmother of Juneteenth." "Since we have these documents that talk about slavery, the University’s first observance of the holiday felt like an opportunity to talk about this history in a really meaningful way," says Charla Wilson, Northwestern’s archivist for the Black experience. Northwestern researchers have spent decades searching for answers to #glioblastoma—the most prevalent, hardest to treat and deadliest of all cancers that begin in the brain. Prof. Maciej Lesniak's team at @northwesternmedicine is studying a pioneering treatment that uses viruses capable of infecting—and potentially destroying—#cancer cells. Lesniak's team is the first in the world to use neural stem cells to deliver a virus to the tumor. Lesniak is one of many researchers at @nufeinbergmed using novel approaches to break the grip of this vexing disease. See more from Northwestern Magazine at the link in our bio. Kids love stickers, but new Northwestern-led research shows how stickers can be used for more than just fun decoration. Dr. Susanna McColley, a cystic fibrosis expert and pediatric pulmonologist at @luriechildrens and @northwesternmedicine , is part of the team that developed a skin-mounted sticker that absorbs sweat and then changes color to provide an accurate, easy-to-read diagnosis of cystic fibrosis within minutes. “Children love stickers,” she said. “The sweat stickers made them smile and giggle. It’s a much easier, comfortable and even fun device to wear.” By softly adhering to the body, the millimeter-thick sticker makes direct but gentle contact with the skin without harsh adhesives. Not only does this make the sticker more comfortable, but it also enables the sticker to collect more sweat needed for the test and provide more accurate results than current clinical methods. Read more about this breakthrough technology at the link in our bio.
