Announcing our summer exhibition “Fotos y Recuerdos: Guatemala in Los Ángeles,” co-presented by Las Fotos Project and OXY ARTS! The exhibition explores the importance of community image making and archives, with original photographs, personal family archives and installations by Las Fotos alum Michelle Montenegro (@dr3amingofu ) and more than 100 personal photographs submitted by community members from the Guatemalan diaspora in Los Angeles, the largest community of its kind outside of Guatemala. Together these works document diverse stories, touching on themes of migration, historical contexts, community preservation practices, and the power of storytelling. 💫Last chance to get your FREE portrait taken in the “Fotos y Recuerdos” exhibition! 💫 Drop-in this Saturday 6/29 between 12-4pm @oxyarts for a family portrait, headshot or fun photo shoot with your loved ones. All timed appointment slots have been booked, but drop-ins are open between 12-4pm—no appointment necessary. Digital images will be emailed to you within five business days and you’ll also have the option to print photos on-site. Portraits are taken by @lasfotosproject CEO Photographers. The Las Fotos Project CEO program is a youth-powered photography agency that provides high-quality photography services to clients who want to communicate their impact through visual storytelling. CEO photographers are ambitious teenage girls and gender-expansive youth, ages 15-19. The CEO program intentionally disrupts a male-dominated industry with a community of developing teen girl professionals poised to amplify the range of skills and talent available in Los Angeles. Next up in the Archive Talks series is @billythecamera on June 6th! William Camargo is a photo-based artist and educator born and raised in Anaheim, California. He is the founder and curator of @latinx_diaspora_archives , an archive Instagram page that elevates communities of color through family photos. His work focuses on gentrification, police violence, and Chicanx/Latinx histories. Through honest storytelling and the photographic perspective, she aims to redistribute power to her subjects and communities.

✨Introducing Archive Talks: a series of conversations between Michelle Montenegro and LA based artists whose work engages with themes from the “Fotos y Recuerdos: Guatemala in Los Ángeles” exhibition @oxyarts . The conversation series will take place in the gallery installation, activating the importance of community image making and archives. First in the series, this Thursday May 30th, is Thalía Gochez (@thaliagochez ), a self taught visual artist living in Los Ángeles, California. As a child of Mexican and Salvadoran immigrant parents, Gochez draws most of her creative inspiration from her upbringing and heritage. Her work aims to highlight identity by honoring and prioritizing the subject’s story through an intentional yet stylized approach. Her photographs are genuine depictions of people of color with an emphasis on women taken in environments that mirror their identity offering space for conversation connection and community building.
