South Florida Drag Entertainer Tiffany Fantasia (@tiffanyfantasia ) sits down with PAMM Assistant Curator Maritza Lacayo (@maritzamelania ) and explains the role of museums as part of the LGBTQ+ greater ally community. #NationalPrideMonth ⁣ ⁣ "The role of a museum is to tell a story and document history. There are still stories to be told in the LGBTQ community for the next generations."⁣ ⁣ Tiffany T. Fantasia is a self-made diva that’s been rocking the SoBe scene for years as an emcee, dancer, singer, comedian, and—as she likes to boast—Andy Cohen’s favorite drag queen! A consummate professional though she may be, performing is not just about pleasing the crowd for Tiffany. It’s just as much about the positive energy the crowd throws back at her. “Performing at the Palace is very therapeutic,” she says. “The fans show true appreciation to you every time.” ⁣ ⁣ How can museums support the LGBTQ+ community better? In honor of #HaitianHeritageMonth , let's explore works in our collection by Haitian artists such as "Fet Chaloska (Chaloska Festival)" by Viktor El-Saieh. Are you familiar with the story behind Chaloska? PAMM's Curator María Elena Ortiz catches us up. Tell us what you know! #ArtInAMinute Fascinated by the history of his native country, Viktor El-Saieh draws from the folklore, myths, traditions, and political leaders that shape Haitian culture. Fet Chaloska or Chaloska’s party surfaced out of this deep desire to answer the why question. What's the purpose of keeping this figure alive, knowing all the things he’s done? Is it a warning for future leaders? Is it a celebration? There is no answer but every year at least one person can be spotted dressed up as #Chaloska at a Haitian carnival. Explore this work in person! Click link in bio to plan your next visit https://bit.ly/3wmZCkc Viktor El-Saieh. "Fet Chaloska," 2015-16. Acrylic on canvas. 72 x 96 inches. Collection Pérez Art Museum Miami, museum purchase with funds provided by PAMM’s Collectors Council with additional contributions provided by Karen Bechtel, Evelio and Lorena Gomez, Jorge M. The art is always in the details! 🧐Take a closer look at Calida Rawles's "On the Other Side of Everything." Merging sharp hyper-realism with poetic abstraction, the artist paints African-American women and men submerged in glistening water; bodies are swarmed by a flurry of bubbles, ripples, and refracted light. For Rawles, water is a spiritually healing element for all people – yet she recognizes its historical connotations to racial exclusion and cultural fears. She uses the complicated duality of water as a platform to address identity politics while reimagining her subjects beyond cultural tropes. At times, her work alludes to current events, even making topographical maps of cities where acts of racially targeted violence have occurred. In other moments, her works are purely celebratory of the resilience, strength, and beauty of African American culture. Click link in bio to visit this weekend and see the piece in person! The art is in the details! Take a closer look at Gisela McDaniel's "Speaking Seeds." The artist's work explores the connections among nature, Indigeneity, and womanhood.⁣ ⁣ This oil-based work portrays a Tlingit chef named Kristen who specializes in the cultivation and preparation of Indigenous foods, including the corn and seeds that McDaniel interweaves into the composition. The audio that accompanies the work captures the subject describing her thoughts on native foods and their relationship to physical, social, and spiritual health. For Kristen, her practice constitutes a form of decolonization, a means of reclaiming the bounties of the land and water as part of a sacred, communal heritage.⁣ ⁣ McDaniel combines oil painting and collaged elements of found and personal objects, which interweave a depth of lived experience to the canvas. The artist seeks to uphold the stories of the indigenous women she speaks with. The subjects in McDaniel's portraits typically donate objects that embody the spirit of their owner. McDaniel regards these belongings as an armor and documents her subject's overcoming of trauma. McDaniel started portrait painting as a means of healing. The artist's work takes inspiration from her own lived experiences dealing with anguish and her ancestral connection to Guam as a Chamarro artist.⁣ ⁣ Explore the newly acquired work on view in PAMM’s Permanent Collection galleries on your next visit to the museum.⁣ ⁣ Gisela McDaniel.
