⁣ Twenty years ago this month, I finished Schneebett, which influenced much of my subsequent work. The poster above was used to promote my collaboration with the Berlin Philharmonic, using an image of the spectacular building designed by Hans Scharoun.⁣ ⁣ Schneebett was first shown at the Berlin Philharmonic in 2004, where the music helped create a total work of art. It was later shown at the Museum der Bildende Künste in Leipzig in 2006, in juxtaposition to the Max Klinger’s sculpture of Beethoven. Then, in 2012, at the Miami Art Museum, where I collaborated with the Miami Symphony Orchestra in presenting two of Beethoven’s late concertos. The work was gifted to the Pérez Art Museum Miami by the German collectors Dieter and Si Rosenkranz to celebrate the museum’s new building designed by Herzog & de Meuron.⁣ ⁣ The installation, inspired by my interest in Beethoven’s convalescence at the end of his life, consisted of two rooms, one that featured an elaborate compressor system that froze a bronze bed, a large tar-and-feather painting of a dense snow-covered forest, and broken tree branches, and the other, an empty ante-chamber that includes only a single chair from which the viewer experiences the environment as a memory of what was, or what might have been.⁣ ⁣ Although the title of the work points towards the bed, what mattered most to me while making this work was how a death-room might remember itself, since it was the room that held the memory of regrets and promises. @berlinphil @mdbkleipzig @pamm #schneebett #totalworkofart #gesamtkunstwerk #sammlungrosenkranz

I remember seeing the cover of Ta-Nehisi Coates “The Water Dancer” and falling in love with it. That was the first time I saw any work by @calidagarciarawles . Fast forward to last week and I was fortunate to be at the opening of her debut solo exhibition “Away with the tides”, Calida brought to life the people and story of the Overtown community in Miami. Overtown was once a vibrant thriving Black community disrupted by the passing of the Federal Aid Highway Act, an unfortunate reality for far too many Black communities across America at that time. The building of the I-95 highway displaced over 15,000 people. The neighborhood is currently seeing a revival due to gentrification, yet again displacing longterm residents. I am so grateful to have been in the room to see Calida in conversation about her work and experiences with this project, including video as a new media in her work. If I had to sum up the vibe it would be that Black people and their stories belong in all the places.

The figures in Rawles’ paintings are residents of the Overtown community—from young children to senior citizens. The exhibition’s focus is on the stories and experiences of those who live in this historic neighborhood. Rawles takes her practice a step further by photographing some of her subjects in natural waters for the very first time, at the historic Virginia Key Beach, which was once racially segregated. By photographing Black subjects in the ocean for the first time, Rawles is able to probe the Atlantic’s history as the site of the supremely exploitative transatlantic slave trade. The finished work critically engages with Miami’s water-entwined climate and mines the history of beauty, oppression, and resilience in #PAMM’s neighboring community of Overtown.

Artist @Jos éParlá will open a forthcoming exhibition of a new series of never-before-seen works and a site-specific mural on November 14th at the Pérez Art Museum Miami (@PAMM ). “Homecoming is deeply rooted in my personal journey, shaped by the rich history of my origins. In this new series, each painting is created as an homage to my native home of Miami,” said José Parlá. “By using a process of layering ink, paint, plaster, and collaged posters that were once posted on the city's walls, each painting bears the imprints of the region’s displacement, immigration, adaptation, and the transformation of words into gestures, made using the names of localities, countries, and its peoples. These abstract gestural marks become indelible echoes in the tapestry of historical psychology and geography, serving as a poignant universal narrative.” #JoseParla @franklinsirmans @maritzamelania @fabianasotillo Photo by Lazaro Llanes @parlastudios @reyparla

All the feels! So grateful to have been able to celebrate the hard work and beautifully conceived exhibition at @pamm of @calidagarciarawles debut solo show “Away with the Tides.” Rawles understands the power of water and sees it as a place of healing. She also recognizes the complex history of the African American experience with water. This particular exhibition honors an area in Miami, the Overtown community. Once a vibrant place, it was literally broken apart during the passing of the Federal Aid Highway Act. Now it is seeing a resurgence, thanks to gentrification, which is further displacing some longtime residents. Every major city knows this phenomenon—highways established that cut through major arteries and gut the place. But not the spirit of the people. And with this show Calida presents the beauty and resilience of folks in and from the area. Part of Rawles’ process is about trust and care. And that is made evident in these works. While this is a show that centers Miami, it’s also an American story. Dare say, universal one and I hope many people can experience this exhibition. “Away with the Tides” is currently on view @pamm through February 2025. Kudos to all who made this show happen. ✨ I was glad to reconnect with longtime friends — and especially see @franklinsirmans in his element. 😘 @calidagarciarawles brings people together. 🦋💙✨🌊✨
