Part of PST ART: Art & Science Collides, ‘Sangre de Nopal/Blood of the Nopal: Tanya Aguiñiga & Porfirio Gutiérrez en Conversación/in Conversation’ opens July 21 at the Fowler Museum at UCLA. Co-presented by @mcasantabarbara and @fowlermuseum , this exhibition offers an expanded understanding of the scientific and Indigenous origins of cochineal, a red dye developed by the Zapotec peoples. Artists Tanya Aguiñiga and Porfirio Gutiérrez work with natural fibers and dyes and share a profound care and passion for the traditional ecological knowledge of the Indigenous Oaxacan diaspora as well as concern for the socio-political crises that affect Indigenous communities on both sides of the Mexico–U.S. border. New commissions and existing works from the artists will be featured alongside Oaxacan textiles from the Fowler collection. Join us for an opening celebration Sat July 20, 6–9 pm with an Indigenous welcome, live music, and 🌵-themed refreshments. Details at the link in bio. The Crenshaw Dairy Mart ( @crenshawdairymart ) is thrilled to share the development of a digital oral history archive as part of its forthcoming exhibition, Free the Land! Free the People! a study of the abolitionist pod for the Getty PST ART: Art & Science Collide ( @pstinla ). The digital archive collates the many collaborators who have been a part of the Crenshaw Dairy Mart abolitionist pod program since 2021. The interviewed collaborators include historically Black-led organizations, farmers, and gardeners across Los Angeles county who have each either contributed to abolitionist pod programming or have been an invaluable collaborator in their contributions as farmers propagating fruits, vegetables, and fresh produce distributed through the abolitionist pod projects. These include the abolitionist pod (prototype) at the Museum of Contemporary Art ( @moca ) Geffen Contemporary in 2021 and the abolitionist pod permanently installed at the Hilda L. Solis Care First Village in 2022. These interviews highlight each respective organization, farmer, gardener, and collaborators’ practices in their respective fields and serve as a larger archive in indexing the networked relationships between Food Justice, Mutual Aid, and the Contemporary Abolitionist Movement, between collaborators and communities across Los Angeles county. Learn more about the organizations interviewed for this trailer here: Huma House, @huma_house Creative Acts, @creative_acts The Plant Plug, @theplantplugla Community Services Unlimited, @csuinc WOW Flower Project, @wowflowerproject Social Justice Learning Institute, @sjli_ca Continued in comments.

Join the Getty (@gettymuseum ) for a two-part event celebrating the work of Getty Artist-in-Residence Carolina Caycedo (@lacaycedo ). Caycedo will be joined by Joseph Valencia (@hooligandisco ), curator at the Vincent Price Art Museum (VPAM) (@vpam_arts ), to discuss her work on the “Serpent River Book” series and her upcoming PST ART exhibition “We Place Life at the Center / Situamos la vida en el centro,” opening at VPAM this September. As part of PST ART: “Art & Science Collide,” “We Place Life at the Center” is an exhibition, publication, and educational platform focused on art and environmental justice, building upon Caycedo’s work challenging traditional Western notions of art and science. Caycedo’s multi-disciplinary practice engages with water and land stewardship, food sovereignty, and fair energy transition using Indigenous and eco-feminist frameworks, nurturing collaborations and networks of solidarity with artists, community scientists, and environmental leaders throughout the Western Hemisphere. Visit getty.edu to reserve your tickets for “Bound Ecologies: In Dialogue with Carolina Caycedo,” and be sure to keep an eye out for Caycedo’s work throughout various PST ART institutions this Fall, including VPAM, UCI Beall Center (@ucibeallcenter ), LAXART (@laxart ), and CAAM (@caaminla ).

The Crenshaw Dairy Mart ( @crenshawdairymart ) is thrilled to announce its forthcoming exhibition, Free the Land! Free the People! a study of the abolitionist pod, as part of the Getty PST ART: Art & Science Collide ( @pstinla ). In 2021, CDM began prototyping and building abolitionist pods - autonomously irrigated, solar-powered gardens within modular geodesic domes - with communities impacted by food insecurity, housing insecurity, and the prison industrial complex. Offered alongside workshops on food justice, art, and healing justice, CDM’s abolitionist pod project reimagines community care and models how art, architecture, and science can collectively address systemic issues. CDM’s programming will accompany an exhibition about the abolitionist pod project and its evolution across Los Angeles County. Events will include health and wellness workshops using herbs and flowers, organic gardening and micro-farming workshops, a community farmers market, and Black farmers’ meet-ups. The exhibition, Free the Land! Free the People! a study of the abolitionist pod, is organized as a survey and studio of the Crenshaw Dairy Mart artist collective’s ongoing research for the abolitionist pod, with illustrations, archival documentation, architectural renderings, sketches, and drawings of the collective’s many configurations of the geodesic structure during its prototype phases as they engage with a history of collectives and cooperatives at the interstices of food justice, land sovereignty, and the Black Liberation Movement. The exhibition falls in conjunction with the artist collective’s year of programmed study and research for the abolitionist pod, entitled Imagination Year, following suit their collective practice of prototyping an abolitionist imagination collating the spiritual-historical-political discourse of the abolitionist pod program, through prayer and somatic-embodiment practices, as it ties to contemporary imaginings of economic autonomy, community resilience, and collective agency for oppressed communities bound to land usage and its reparations. Continued in comments.

“Art made about water in Los Angeles might be its own genre considering how often and with what sincere depth artists consider the role of the river in the Los Angeles landscape and its infrastructure.” PST ART partners are using California’s water crisis as the backdrop of their “Art & Science Collide” exhibitions.
