“Contemporary stresses have molded, under their force, a model of self-made SheEO virtue. The handsfree, takeaway latte, sorry-this-is-a-really-busy-week, workaholic has become a vision of aspiration and success. The best girls are getting paid, getting book deals, getting ahead. And that has, I think, made it harder to see that this boss bitch behaviour – really just a cracked Ikea reflection of any boomer individualistic value system – is a symptom of our precarity, not a necessary feature of our life, or a quality worthy of praise.” GIRLFRIENDS by Thea McLachlan (@theafraser_ ) with The Wall (2000) by Justine Kurland in Real Review issue #15 . “In Susan Sontag’s final book, Regarding the Pain of Others (2003), she wondered if photographs of suffering and violence – whilst having the potential to emotionally affect viewers – fail to truly evoke action or empathy. What sets in is compassion fatigue and desensitisation, which eventually leads to the diminishing power of such violent images. Sontag believed that at its worst, graphic imagery can dehumanise victims of violence by presenting their suffering as spectacle. I’d update that today, and claim that suffering is now a category of content.” @shumonbasar interviewed for the latest issue of Real Review. Link in bio. #whatitmeanstolivetoday

“Passports, once mere certificates of nationality, have evolved into powerful instruments that shape lives and define opportunities. In a world where the privilege of mobility hinges on one’s country of origin, they can confer immense freedom or impose suffocating restrictions. The historical trajectory of passports reflects a complex interplay between geopolitics, economics, and societal norms. From a time when they were optional for European travel, to their current status as vital international documents, passports have been both a reflection and a driver of global shifts.” Read a review of the passport by @eliastamer in issue #15 , available through the link in our bio. “Forbidden Planet is superficially a love story in which a charming soldier must win a young woman’s heart without alerting her powerful and vengeful father. In reality, it is a treatise on human agency and the folly of the modern paradigm.” Read Lea Moreau’s review of the 1956 science fiction film in RR15 now. Link in our bio. #whatitmeanstolivetoday

@maddyweavers reviews the absurdity of spectatorship in Real Review issue #15 . “The game requires 21 balls in seven colours: red, yellow, green, brown, blue, pink, and black. From 1937, snooker was broadcast in black and white. This meant that for 32 years, snooker balls appeared on television in the order: slate grey, platinum grey, ash grey, battleship grey, stone grey, greige and black.” Find it in print, link in our bio. #whatitmeanstolivetoday
