Alt Text Selfies is a project by Finnegan Shannon, Bojana Coklyat, and Olivia Dreisinger. It presents over 100 pieces of self-description writing, or “alt text selfies.”
The website, which I created in collaboration with Taichi Wi, prioritizes accessibility and auditory aspects throughout.

It was especially wonderful to work on this project, as it feels like a natural continuation from Alt Text as Poetry () which Taichi and I worked on with Bojana and Finnegan back in 2020 :)
The video in the third slide shows me tapping through various selfies on the mobile website and playing some with audio aloud. The ones I played aloud are Hayley Cranberry Small, Chinar Shah, and beyza durmuş ✨🎐

at the time (2014), i was teaching a new class “interactive concrete poetry” and was inspired by the works of dom sylvester houedard, concrete poet and monk. i had also previously established a practice of making “puddle cakes” so this image was eventually printed on a cake …

my piece “on eggs” is now available online ✨☺️
it started almost a decade ago as a channel on are.na about “eggs in art and design.” this particular narrative began as a presentation in copenhagen for “naive yearly” (organized by @kristoffer_tjalve ) 🥚🌻 and then was edited and published by @aredotna . friend and editor @meggmillerr says my piece is a “somewhat fantastical meditation on creative processes, the seen and the unseen, support structures, and honor”

i’m excited to share a three-week workshop i’m leading this coming january in nyc, which you are welcome to apply. it’s called “ultralight” and is about creating lightweight websites as an extension of creative practice — understanding the web as connected to physical place & time and exploring topics including accessibility, sustainability, and formats. we’ll cover some html, css, javascript, and a some physical computing.

(As maybe you know, @aredotna is a platform for networked curation & research, and I’ve been an active member for over a decade, using it as an instrumental tool in my teaching and practice. So it’s very special to be working more with Are.na now.)
From Wikipedia’s page on “gift shop” — “a gift shop is a store primarily selling souvenirs, memorabilia, and other items relating to a particular topic or theme.”
Our theme is what makes Are.na itself: its participants, their ideas, and the worlds they create together. In other words, the gift store is a gradually growing collection of collaborations in the form of real things...
