Next week, on Thursday, June 27th: composer @scott.wollschleger returns to Roulette to celebrate the release of his new album BETWEEN BREATH, out TODAY on @newfocusrecordings ! 🔥 Compositions by Wollschleger – recently described as “a small masterpiece” by the @nytimes – will be performed by violin/violist Miranda Cuckson, percussionist Kevin Sims, trombonist William Lang @williamkeatslang , and pianists Karl Larson and Anne Rainwater, all close collaborators of Wollschleger. The program will be highlighted by the New York premiere of a major new work for solo violin: 𝘚𝘦𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘵 𝘔𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘕𝘰. 7, in addition to New York premieres of multiple other new works. The man, the myth, the legend—Jim Staley—is featured on this month’s episode of The Roulette Tapes, out today, June 1, 2024. For this special extended episode, Roulette cofounder and Director of Special Projects David Weinstein @daviddublyoo sat down with Jim Staley in his loft, the home of the original Roulette concert series—not to talk about Roulette, but about Staley’s musicianship. Staley traces his path as a trombonist, from playing in a Vietnam-era Army band and as an orchestral musician; through encounters with influential mentors and techniques; and musical awakenings that led to a career as a master improviser and Director of Roulette. The episode features musical appearances by John Zorn, Ikue Mori, Zeena Parkins @zpribbon , @bill.frisell , Fred Frith @ffr1th , Chris Cochrane @thatmadm , Derek Bailey, Joey Baron, Kyoko Kitamura, and Cyro Baptista @cyrobaptista with recordings captured between 1986 and 2015. Staley is stepping down from his role as Artistic Director at the end of the season, and will be honored at Roulette’s 45th Anniversary Gala this Thursday, June 6, 2024 with an all-star lineup of performers.
