Carolyn Chen’s HOW TO FALL APART opens tonight in LA! To celebrate, we’re taking another look at Chen’s inspiration. THREE TURTLES WERE TROTTING ON A VERY NARROW SIDEWALK When writing #HowtoFallApart , composer and poet Carolyn Chen sourced inspiration from myriad myths from Hindi, Chinese, and Native American traditions, all centering on tales of a giant turtle that supports the world. Chen's evocative work describes cosmic, natural, and human processes of disintegration, aging, and falling apart. HOW TO FALL APART is presented in a co-production with @mondayeveningconcerts , at @ladanceproject . photo by Josh S. Rose

Ahead of next week’s performances of Carolyn Chen’s HOW TO FALL APART, we’re exploring of few of Chen’s sources of inspiration. I PASSED UNDER THE ROOF OF THE HEAVENS This Flammarion engraving (1888) depicts a man, clothed in a long robe and carrying a staff, kneeling down passing his head, shoulders, and right arm through a gap between the star-studded sky and the earth, discovering a marvelous realm of circling clouds, fires and suns beyond the heavens. Citing several ancient beliefs in a flat Earth and the greater universe as a dome, composer Carolyn Chen builds on her long-standing compositional work "in which sensuality and abstraction find common ground" (LA Times). Don't miss ZARABANDA VARIATIONS at @clarkart ! May 19th at 4pm! Conceived by performer, composer, and AMOC* member Keir GoGwilt, ZARABANDA VARIATIONS brings together a group of visionary composers, improvisers, and performers, inspired by musical histories of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century New Spain, or present-day Mexico and the United States. Over the course of the performance, the familiar tonalities and harmonies of early Baroque music are warped into contemporary and futuristic soundscapes. The zarabanda is a dance with possibly Spanish, pre-Columbian American, and Arab origins, a plausible etymology from the Bantu nsala-banda, which eventually transformed into a courtly European Baroque dance. This performance sounds the archival gaps of early American music, creating a surprising and vibrant synthesis of European and Latin Baroque, folk, and contemporary musical traditions. Click on the link in our bio to learn more. The team includes: Jonny Allen @jonny_jonnyallen (percussion) Mariana Flores Bucio @mfloresbucio (singer) Iva Casian-Lokas @iva_cl (cello) Carrie Frey @freyaviol (viola) Keir GoGwilt @keir_gogwilt (violin) Alec Goldfarb @alecgoldfarb (guitars) Kyle Motl @kylemotl (bass) Chris Otto (violin) Wilfrido Terrazas (flutes) Compositions by Keir GoGwilt, Vicente Atria (@vicente.wav ), and Wilfrido Terrazas. Poetry and recitations by Edgar Garcia(@edgaresque ).
