More than 12K miles traveled, 200 oz. of coffee, and 1 great attitude. 😎 Follow registrar Kelly Parady’s journey to pick up Mark Rothko’s “No. 14” (1960) from @fondationlv in Paris, including the parts you rarely get to hear about. Drop any questions you have for Kelly in the comments! Then, stop by to see “No. 14” on Floor 2. What does music mean to you? @sfmoma ’s latest exhibition “Art of Noise” invites you to reflect on your experiences with music: What was your first listening device? Did you have a record player or an iPod? Who was the first artist you saw in concert? Do you still have the concert poster? From psychedelic rock posters to teenage engineering’s AI-generated choir, the exhibition maps the way design has altered the way we’ve experienced music over the last 100 years. Curious to learn more? “Art of Noise” is open through August 18, 2024! #SFMOMA #SanFrancisco #Music #ProductDesign #ListenRoom

"Amy Sherald: American Sublime" is coming to SFMOMA this fall. The exhibition will highlight the impact of Sherald’s work on American culture as she addresses the omission of Black figures from the history of figure painting. She has described her paintings as offering a resting place, an opportunity to see Black figures not in contention, not racialized or politicized, but simply being. The artist's iconic portraits of Michelle Obama and Breonna Taylor will be joined by some of her earliest, rarely-seen works, as well as new works created specifically for the exhibition. Be the first to know more about Sherald's exhibition by joining our email list. @asherald [Amy Sherald, "For Love, and for Country," 2022; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; © Amy Sherald; photo: Joseph Hyde, courtesy the artist and Hauser & Wirth] #AmySherald #SanFrancisco #BayArea

For over two decades, Zanele Muholi has documented the lives of Black LGBTQ+ people in South Africa. For Muholi, art is a tool to document queer culture for present and future generations. In 2002, Muholi cofounded the Forum for the Empowerment of Women, an organization dedicated to providing access to health care, housing, and education for Black lesbians. They describe themselves as a “visual activist.” Muholi believes that it matters who stands behind the camera as well as in front of it. Whether their lens is focused on themselves, their friends, or other members of the LGBQT+ community, the individuals they photograph are participants and collaborators in the making of their portraits. While the visual representation of queer people is an act of defiance that comes with risk, it is ultimately an important statement of pride and an avenue toward acceptance by the wider community. Muholi’s self-portraits shown here are: - “Qiniso, The Sails, Durban” (2019) and “Bester, I, Mayotte (0093)” (2015) in @sfmoma ’s “Zanele Muholi: Eye Me” exhibition (on view through August 18) - “Miss (Black) Lesbian I and II” (2009) from @moadsf ’s past exhibition “Black Venus” - “Zazi II, ISGM, Boston,” (2019) and “Buhlalu I, The Decks, Cape Town,” (2019) in the @tate ’s exhibition. @muholizanele ’s works are also on view at the @southernguildgallery in Los Angeles and at the @tate in London.

All eyes on this new work: Kara Walker’s “Fortuna and the Immortality Garden (Machine)” opens Monday, July 1 in our free Roberts Family Gallery. Swipe to see a few photos taken as the artist developed this commission: 1. Walker sculpting one of the eight automatons in the exhibition 2. In Walker’s studio: her experimentation with the automatons’ hands and bodies 3. A preliminary sketch from Walker’s notes. In this work, she examines the fear and loss we experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic, trauma, and the objectives of technology and its effect on society. “I wanted to create a space for some kind of healing,” said Walker. Join us in celebrating the exhibition’s opening this Monday, July 1 from 4–6 p.m. Advanced tickets are sold out online; walk-ups welcome! Head to the link in bio for more information. _ @kara_walker_official [Kara Walker, Fortuna and the Immortality Garden (Machine), work in progress, 2023-2024; © Kara Walker; photo: Ari Marcopoulos; Kara Walker; photo Ari Marcopoulos, courtesy Sikkema Jenkins & Co.; Kara Walker, Fortuna and the Immortality Garden (Machine), work in progress, 2023-2024; © Kara Walker; photo: Ari Marcopoulos; Kara Walker, study for Fortuna and the Immortality Garden (Machine), 2023-2024; © Kara Walker] #KaraWalker #SanFrancisco #BayArea

🌞Today is the first day of summer! Penelope Umbrico (@penelopeumbrico ) began her project "Suns from Sunsets from Flickr" in 2006 when she started looking for the most photographed subject on Flickr. "Perhaps part of the beauty of taking a picture of a sunset is that while you are doing it it’s likely that a million other people are doing it as well—at exactly the same time. I love this idea of collective practice, something we all engage in despite any artistic concern, knowing that there have been millions before and there will be millions after." — Umbrico Here's to capturing many more sunset photos this summer. _ [Penelope Umbrico, "5,377,183 Suns (from Sunsets) from Flickr (Partial) 4/28/09," 2009, Collection SFMOMA, Members of Foto Forum purchase © Penelope Umbrico] #Summer #SummerSolstice

Confident ✅ Daring ✅ Radiant ✅ Zanele Muholi’s (@muholizanele ) photo series “Brave Beauties (2014-ongoing) invites trans women, gender-nonconforming individuals, and nonbinary people to feel pride and comfort in their own skin. Many of the individuals depicted are contestants in queer beauty pageants, where individuals can be celebrated for their beauty outside of white, heteronormative spheres. These are spaces with which Muholi is personally familiar, having won second place in such a pageant in 1997. Seen here is @mellisa_mbambo —winner of Miss Trans South Africa in 2020/2021! She’s also a model, photographer, and trans activist.
