The star of our New York Magnificent Jewels sale found a new home on Friday to the tune of $3.6 million, pushing the entire sale total above $30 million. Watch as @qbruning brings down the hammer on this rare Van Cleef & Arpels diamond ‘tie’ necklace, which sold for a staggering 3X its high estimate after four minutes of bidding in our sale room. It’s exceedingly rare to find a signed Van Cleef & Arpels tie necklace and this one from around 1929 is the first of its kind to surface at auction in many years. The elegant style featured a long pendant or tassel that could be worn at the front of a dress, down the back for dresses cut low, or draped asymmetrically over one shoulder. An homage to the vibrant hues of the city, the “Autumn in New York” brooch by Irish jeweler Nigel O’Reilly features an extraordinarily rare 0.88-carat certified natural green diamond and its heart. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, the brooch is sculpted from recycled and refined 18kt rose gold. Hollywood Golden Age icon Ava Gardner prided herself on her highly refined jewelry collection, including this stunning emerald and diamond ring. She recalled how she acquired a magnificent 7.46-carat emerald in LA and subsequently had it mounted as a ring by Van Cleef & Arpels New York in 1961. In 1989, Gardner decided to part with a number of jewels at Sotheby’s New York. After her passing the following year, the remainder of her collection was offered at Sotheby’s London, including this spectacular ring. How many ways can you wear this rare 1929 Van Cleef & Arpels ‘tie’ necklace? From the mid-1920s to the early 1930s, Van Cleef & Arpels conceived several designs for “tie necklaces.” These elaborate jewels terminated in a long pendant or tassel that could be worn at the front of a dress, like a cravat, or draped asymmetrically over one shoulder. The style lent itself perfectly to dresses of the era cut low in the back. Exceedingly rare, this is the first of its kind to come to auction in the recent years and it stars in the Magnificent Jewels auction at #SothebysNewYork , presented in partnership with @silverseacruises .
