Envisioned as a semi-public space, the $49 million Lake Whitney Water Purification Facility and Park is now welcoming visitors. “Our goal is to reach out to the community and let the community come into our facility,” said Jesse Culbertson, assistant chief operator of water management at Regional Water Authority. Geothermally heated and cooled via 88 wells, Lake Whitney is the largest green roof in the state of Connecticut. It is one of four facilities operated by RWA, which provide over 40 million gallons of clean water per day to roughly 430,000 people. On July 19, 2024, the City of Ostrava, Janáček Philharmonic, Steven Holl Architects and Architecture Acts will celebrate the groundbreaking ceremony of the Ostrava Concert Hall. “The new concert hall in Ostrava will be an inspiring place for the public and visitors from abroad who appreciate the great modern music legendary to Ostrava. The concept of a ‘perfect acoustic instrument in its case’ has been carried out in all the working drawings and now will be realized in space and sound. It’s an extremely exciting moment for music and architecture.” - Steven Holl “I believe that the positive impact of this project, which is unprecedented in the Czech Republic, will be crucial for the development of Ostrava. Ostrava will indelibly put itself on the cultural map of Europe.” - Jan Žemla, Director of the Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava “Thanks to such prominent architectural figures and the extensive work of the teams involved in the implementation of these unique projects, Ostrava will be able to offer a new multifunctional complex that has no rival in the country.” – Jan Dohnal, Mayor of Ostrava Following the groundbreaking ceremony, Steven Holl and Dimitra Tsachrelia with Mayor Dohnal will present at the international Meltingpot Forum during the Colours of Ostrava Festival, details to be announced. @ostrava_oficialni @jandohnal_primator @janackovafilharmonie #JanackovaFilharmonie @architectureacts #ArchitectureActs #NagataAcoustics #Ostrava @mappaostrava @colours_cz @colours_eng #ColoursOfOstrava #Colours2024 @meltingpotforum #MeltingpotForum #Architecture #StevenHollArchitects #StevenHoll #SHA

June 20, 2024, Steven Holl Architects celebrated summer solstice at L-House, raising a glass with an intimate gathering of friends in the nearly completed live/work building in historic Hudson, New York. Natural light and ventilation are given expression in a vertical light monitor, and the all-wooden interior receives sunlight from all orientations. This is the first geothermally heated and cooled house in Hudson. The planar urban composition is articulated with a south-facing green courtyard and a rain collecting pool. Marking the first day of summer with ceremony, L-House will complete by the season’s end. @ripvanmodern @peakconstruction @naturalenergysolutioonsllc #hudsonlhouse #hudsonmodern #hudsonny #stevenhollarchitects #stevenholl #sha

“When I was invited to exhibit at ‘T’ Space I was fascinated by the complexity of the architecture, specifically the play between symmetrical and asymmetrical elements… The essential impulse of all of my installations is to respond to the architectural setting. The wall painting I’ve done for this installation is quite different from my other work. I wanted to respond to the simple materiality of the space and its woodland setting.” – Peter Halley “I see Peter’s painting as a contour and expansion of the architecture and my work as a compression and distortion through fragmentated planes and elongated space... My primary concern is creating unfixed forms that conjure references ranging from the intimacy of textiles to the monumentality of the built environment.” – Steph Gonzalez-Turner ‘T’ Space launches the 2024 Synthesis of the Arts season with a collaboration between Peter Halley and Steph-Gonzelez Turner on view through July 28, 2024. Franklin & Marshall College President Barbara Altmann states: “What we intended this space for was a place for self-expression and self-discovery, but I think it’s actually fulfilling an even higher function, which is that it gives us a place for fun, for play, and also really a place for hope, for aspiration.” Steven Holl Architects and Spirit of Space present a new, short film featuring the Winter Visual Arts Center at F&M, Lancaster, PA. Domus names Kiasma Museum, Helsinki, as one of the top 50 museums to visit in a lifetime. “Kiasma is the first museum designed by Steven Holl, who, up to that point, had only completed a few projects while running a small studio akin to an atelier for conceptual designs and fresh architectural concepts… The building aimed to serve as a catalyst for a new urban configuration, fostering increased foot traffic while providing serene and well-illuminated environments for direct art experiences. Light plays a crucial role in this architecture, particularly given Helsinki’s unique light conditions, which are never constant due to continuous meteorological shifts and are notably horizontal due to its high latitude. The interplay of reflections is often viewed as a means of indirectly guiding natural light.” Since opening in 1998, Kiasma continues to make contemporary art accessible to the public through exhibitions, performances, events, and educational programs while collecting and preserving cultural heritage as part of the Finnish National Gallery. Visit the link in bio for the full Domus feature. Stay tuned: this fall 2024 Steven Holl Architects’ newest residential design Meander Housing opens, marking the studio’s second project in Helsinki. @domusweb @kiasmamuseum @newilbau #Domus #Kiasma #Helsinki #ArtMuseums #ContemporaryArt #Meander #StevenHollArchitects #StevenHoll #SHA Photos 1, 4 © Paul Warchol; photos 2, 3, 5 courtesy Kiasma Museum

F&M Professor of Art History Kostis Kourelis: “My ability to go from the roots of the tree to its canopy through the building… [allows] me to contextualize my natural environment in an embodied way. It’s temporal and it’s sequential... it is a kind of contextualism that is profound and philosophical.” @spiritofspace @fandmcollege #SpiritOfSpace #FranklinAndMarshall #FAndM #WinterVisualArtsCenter #ArchitectureFilms #Architecture #StevenHollArchitects #StevenHoll #SHA

Watch the full video on YouTube via the link in bio. The large diameter trees, the oldest elements on Franklin & Marshall’s 52-acre arboretum campus, were the conceptual generator of the building’s geometry. As a lightweight building, its main floor is lifted into the trees on a porous ground level open to the campus and the adjacent park. @spiritofspace @fandmcollege #SpiritOfSpace #FranklinAndMarshall #FAndM #WinterVisualArtsCenter #ArchitectureFilms #Architecture #StevenHollArchitects #StevenHoll #SHA

Rubenstein Commons at the Institute for Advanced Study is a finalist in this year’s Architizer A+ Awards in the +Glass Category. Cast your vote for People’s Choice via the link in bio. Prismatic glass breaks white light into the color spectrum, energizing the interiors with natural light and color. A glass system across 21 clerestories creates solar shading on south, east and west facades. The glass is milled into a custom sawtooth profile, then laminated onto an IGU to mitigate solar heat gain thereby improving the building’s energy performance. Space Curve light fixtures illuminate the café of Rubenstein Commons. These custom glass pendants were fabricated from CNC cut cherry wood molds milled in the SHA shop by Director of Fabrications Michael Haddy, then blown by KEEP at UrbanGlass Studio. “We believe in the experiential dimensions of architecture, the haptic realm of material and detail. Glass becomes radiant as, in transformed states, its functional role is shifted. Bending glass induces dazzling variations to a simple plane with the geometric curvature of reflected light. Cast glass with its mysterious opacity traps light in its mass and projects it in a diffused glow.” – Steven Holl @architizer @instituteforadvancedstudy @haddy_haddy_haddy @keepbrooklyn @urbanglass_nyc #ArchitizerAwards #ArchitectureAwards #Fabrication #InstituteForAdvancedStudy #IAS #RubensteinCommons #StevenHollArchitects #StevenHoll #SHA

Dimitra Tsachrelia, Steven Holl, Philippe de Montebello, and Petrit Halilaj celebrate the opening of “Abetare,” Halilaj’s rooftop commission at The Met. Halilaj’s practice is informed by his native country, Kosovo, and the cultural and political context of the region. The artist’s new installation at The Met gives sculptural dimension to drawings by school children from Kosovo and Albania, including birds, flowers, and a giant spider. @metmuseum @xixellojme #MetPetritHalilaj #CantorRoofGarden #PetritHalilaj
