“There is the old adage that Winston Churchill said: ‘First we shape our buildings, and then they shape us.’ This, now we know, is somewhat true. We passed into a new phase of understanding the importance of architecture. Light, space, volume [are] very important to human existence and to psychology.” – Steven Holl   “The most important thing is nature. Preserve what is here and allow for the wildlife to exist around the house.” – Dimitra Tsachrelia   Steven Holl and Dimitra Tsachrelia introduce the concepts driving the design for the Ex of IN House. May 2022 marks the centenary of composer Iannis Xenakis (1922-2001). “Architectonics of Music,” Steven Holl and Dimitra Tsachrelia’s Columbia GSAPP (@columbiagsapp ) studio, departed from the music of Xenakis in 2017 and 2013. Co-taught with composer Raphael Mostel, the students translated music excerpts into space, material, and form, then proposed experimental designs. “Music, like architecture, is an immersive experience–it surrounds you. One can turn away from a painting or a work of sculpture, while music and architecture engulf the body in space.” – Steven Holl #ArchitectonicsOfMusic #IannisXenakis #Xenakis #XenakisCentenary #ColumbiaGSAPP #RaphaelMostel #DimitraTsachrelia #StevenHoll

Aimed at being a social condenser, the Cofco Cultural and Health Center is of spatial energy and openness, inviting the whole community in for recreational and cultural programs. The landscape and two public buildings are merged by the concept of “clocks and clouds.” The landscape is organized in large, clocklike circles forming a central public space, and the buildings are cloudlike in their porosity and openness.   “I had the idea of clocks and clouds based on a text by Karl Popper where he divides the world into clocks—everything that is rational—and clouds—things that we can’t quite figure out. This notion of clocks, these circles, make this public space the central element and you can see both buildings shape that curved space. The notion of a cloud-like cutting is occurring in the concrete of the facades.” – Steven Holl   Watch the full video on Vimeo, link in bio.   Video courtesy AOGVision @aogvision #cofcoculturalandhealthcenter #shanghai #stevenhollarchitects #stevenholl #SHA

The new Shanghai Cofco Cultural and Health Center aims at being a social condenser, fostering community among the residents of the surrounding new housing blocks with a public space and park along an existing canal. The landscape and two new public buildings are merged by the concept of clocks and clouds. The landscape is organized in large, clocklike circles forming a central public space, and the buildings are cloudlike in their porosity and openness. The Cultural Center, built out of light grey concrete, hovers over a transparent glass base which exposes the café, game and recreation rooms. A curved ramp, climbing gently up to the second floor creates a continuous overlooking experience. The Health Center, also made of light grey concrete, is shaped by the curves of the central landscape space, developing a strong relationship between its “cloud-like” parts and the whole of the landscape. Both buildings have green sedum roofs merging further with the landscape when seen from above and in the surrounding apartment buildings. The first exhibition of the 2021 Season is Anthony Titus’s “Ruptures and Reconciliations”. “What is really exciting is we have an exhibition of Anthony’s work that is long overdue and it really connects with the mission of our 'T' Space program which is the synthesis of the arts: painting, sculpture, architecture music. Anthony’s exhibition perfectly brings all of these things together.” -Steven Holl Follow the link in our bio to Register for the event. @tspaceandsmhf @anthonytitusstudio #TSpace #TSpaceRhinebeck #StevenHoll #StevenHollArchitects

"... I send this message on Earth Day; a reset after a year of reflecting on the importance of human rebalancing regarding nature. . . This year, with new work, and I think there's a lot, I advise you to keep your idealism. Consider each place you make can be a mini utopia of the new. Last week, I asked a house client if they had any further questions, and the husband looked up smiling and asked, 'what is the meaning of life?' 'Architecture!' I shot back immediately, and I said, "an ancient Chinese philosopher once said: 'In life, one must do two things, plant a tree and build a house.' Congratulations Graduating Architects. You must reset the future." – Steven Holl, April 22, 2021 @columbiagsapp @columbia #ArchitectureStudents #StevenHoll #StevenHollArchitects #SHA #ColumbiaGSAPP #ColumbiaGraduation

Steven Holl describes the concept of the new Winter Visual Arts Building at Franklin and Marshall: “[We] are very happy about the opening, virtually, of our Franklin & Marshall Winter Arts Center. . . I would like to just say a few things about the concept: Basically . . . my first sketches were about Ben Franklin’s kite being stuck in the trees when he was trying to discover electricity, which was a silly sketch; but then I had another revelation, and that is the trees are the largest thing on this campus, and I made the actual geometry of the building concave response to the diameter of these trees. . . We realized this building in 4 years.”
