Born this week in 1824 was William Thomson FRS, better known as Lord Kelvin. The SI unit of temperature, the kelvin, is named his honour. This x-ray photo was taken by Wilhelm Röntgen in 1896 at a Royal Society Conversazione - the precursor to our #SummerScience Exhibition!
This week we were very happy to unveil a new portrait of the legend that is Sir David Attenborough FRS, painted by world-renowned artist Jonathan Yeo and commissioned by the Royal Society. The painting celebrates 40 years of Sir David's Fellowship to the Society, and his brilliant career spanning decades of bringing the majesty of nature to people's screens. Take a look at the making of the portrait, and see it in person next week at our #SummerScience Exhibition:
Fresh from the unveiling of his portrait of King Charles III, artist Jonathan Yeo discusses his experience of painting Sir David Attenborough FRS for the Royal Society.
*Correction: There was a transcription error in the subtitles of this video. Where the subtitles read “I didn’t even recognise myself,” David Attenborough actually said, “I’d even recognise myself.”
