This spring, for a month in May, I’ll be opening the 4th solo exhibition <Heatwave> at CAMERA the Italian Centre for Photography in Turin, Italy. This exhibition which was already presented in Zurich in 2022, will be introduced again in Italy and figures out the relationship between nature, human, and technology regarding threats of the anthropocene including climate change as a series of photographic images. What is the connection between man, nature, and technology in the Anthropocene era?
This new geological era recognizes the human species as the one that most influences the planet. From this assumption stem well-known problems: global warming, climate imbalances, loss of habitat, and biodiversity.
Dongkyun Vak’s goal is not simply to photograph and document the destruction of our planet; rather, he turns inward and constructs something akin to a mental space in his studio, distancing himself from the event itself and instead investigating the structure of the situation. In doing so, the artist places at the center of his work the significant role that technology plays in this historical turning point, creating a sort of mental map of today’s visual environment.
