Our Cloverleaf Sofa (1969) is part of the “Social Seating” Exhibition at the Pinakothek der Moderne @pinakothekdermoderne . The @dieneuesammlung team has transformed the rotunda showing 15 different seating objects from the 1950’s to the present day. The Cloverleaf Sofa (1967) is a large sculpturally conceived sofa in the shape of a clover leaf. It was designed especially for the Visiona 2 (1970) exhibition by Verner Panton. The sofa consists of a base with a narrow undulating backrest that creates a number of niches where people can sit facing alternately in or out. Verner Panton’s Wire Stool (reintroduced by @andtradition ) is blending a minimal and functional aesthetic with a poetic approach towards design. The idea was sparked when Marianne Panton during a party expressed that she wished they had more chairs. Panton of course had to find a creative, yet practical response to his wife’s request. Always seeing the value of multi-functionality, as a result, he designed the Wire Stool as a portable seating option that’s equally as suitable as a side table, plant stand or a visually encapsulating podium for an array of different objects. Panton was drawn to its paradoxical nature – a design that combines airy transparency with structural integrity and aesthetic elegance. 1995: Among the not entirely rare photos in which the Panton Chair is depicted together with a semi-nude or even nude woman— one picture stands out in particular. The one that was printed on the cover of the British edition of Vogue fashion magazine in January 1995: Supermodel Kate Moss - then still in the early stages of her career, but already a big star - nude on a red Panton chair! The picture attracted some attention, but - despite all the nudity - it was completely harmless and certainly pleasantly free of any raunchiness. Why does this picture come to mind right now? „The S-Chair 1956/1965“. For the German WK design competition in 1956, Panton proposed this chair made from a single piece of plywood; however, the chair did not win the prize. Some years later, Panton met Mr A Sommer, specialist of molded plywood, for whom the S chair became a prestige project – an opportunity to demonstrate that he and his factory could achieve the impossible. In the laminated construction, with the plywood bending first one way and then another, the supporting and springy board endures both torsion and pressure. The chair, which became the first cantilever model in the history of furniture design to be made from one continuous piece of material, garnered considerable attention in professional circles and was awarded the Rosenthal Studio Prize.
