Savoring the truly showstopping Kara Walker installation at SFMOMA with CCA Wattis dream team past, present, and future @ranumukherjee @daisynam and @deedsweaves . Huge congrats to @kara_walker_official @eungiej00 and all involved. Only posting photos of the community opening revelry. The work really needs to be experienced in person.

Record temps mean my new hood is the perfect spot to be. Woke up with the sun this morning (no blinds yet) and headed to the beach before heading into work. We cross the Great Highway and once we are past the snowy plover protected sand dunes, the leash comes off and Magpie runs towards the waves. Fog is the OG and best A/C. #sf #sunset #newhome #oceanbeach

Lindsey White’s “Fantastico” show @casemoregallery in SF is one of the best gallery shows I’ve seen anywhere since returning to the Bay Area two years ago. My dear friend, wonderfully gifted writer, and community forger @antonstuebner captures the show with the same exquisite tenderness and love I felt in this work: “Fantastico was a party supply store South of Market that more than lived up to its name: a maze of wonder and weird shit around every corner. Lindsey’s brilliant and exquisitely realized show is a tribute to those beautifully weird spaces that we’ve loved and lost, like Fantastico and SFAI, where we learn to face the strange, embrace the absurd, and dream up new possibilities for ourselves and others. The show is an elegy, but its also a celebration of those legacies, and what happens when we come together and honor the ineffable power of that togetherness.” The little dog tchotchkes throughout the show—which Lindsey refers to her as her Greek chorus, absolutely slayed me. I love a good tchotchke but to realize she has rendered them in resin and wood and asked a sign painter friend to paint the inscriptions. So much love, care, and tenderness in these works. Up through July 13 and then reopening through Aug after the Art Book Fair. Not to be missed! @ldubbles @juliecasemore @minnesotastreetproject #sfart

Looking up at the eucalyptus and clouds drifting by during the first of Stern Grove’s amazing free summer concert season was the best way to wrap my first weekend in our new 🏡 in the Sunset. Love being feet from a great park and walking distance from the beach, and all the art and culture on offer in this amazing city. Friday started with a South African braai in honor of @babiryesculptor ’s first show at the @deyoungmuseum and Sunday ended with meeting new friends who were kind enough to share an extra last minute invite to Tegan and Sara. Supremely awesome combo of music, nature, and people watching. SF and the Sunset: love you so much ❤️ #sfsunset @charujunejasf @lizo

Inaugural romp and roll in our new hood. Magpie’s favorite beach is one drenched in fog. As the rest of the country experiences scorching heat waves, I’m so grateful to need a sweatshirt when I leave the house (clearly the sign of a Bay Area native!) I love it all…a steamy Texas summer night and a chilly SF summer day. The Sunset is already such a happy home. 🩶🩶🩶 #sunset #sf

San Diego is famous for its world-class zoo but if you haven’t experienced this artwork by the late, great artist Robert Irwin, do yourself a favor and get to @mcasandiego . Its a transcendent experience to feel and smell the ocean air and hear the waves. It’s an artwork about looking with all your senses and really being present. Museums are built to be hermetically-sealed climate-controlled containers so the sheer audacity and trust Irwin (a longtime resident) must have had with the museum to get this to happen adds to the thrill I get every time I experience it. Art works are not just great ideas—they are reflections of human relationships. As a museum director and curator, we can never lose sight of the importance of that. The trust evident in this work really raises the bar! Cantor curatorial team in one of the most exquisite museum galleries I’ve ever experienced—featuring impossible-to-photograph works by California Light + Space artists such as DeWain Valentine, Larry Bell, Mary Corse, and Peter Alexander. Being in spaces this beautiful make group photos feel like Vanity Fair spreads 😆. Thank you curator @jilldawsey for touring us through the new MCA San Diego galleries in downtown La Jolla designed by @annabelleselldorf . Just wow. So many museum expansions get the architecture wrong with imposing ceiling heights that dwarf art and people and distracting architectural features that scream, look at me when we should be looking at art. This building lets the art and ocean views sing. @cantorarts @mcasandiego @kanjogram @jilldawsey @larrybellstudio #marycorse #peteralexander #dewainvalentine #johnmccracken #raulguerrero ellsworthkelly #nancygraves #edruscha #markrothko

Epic turnout for Calli: The Art of Xicanx Peoples at @oaklandmuseumca . Artists, curators, professors, activists from all across the country. Friday night programming at the Oakland Museum sets the bar. And who knew that their terrace was a birdwatching hotspot?? Black-crowned night herons everywhere. I’m so grateful for all the Day Jobs love. 💛🏆🧡This visitor comment card (might need to frame it!), the thoughtful press coverage, friends and colleagues visiting from near and far, the social media shout outs, cards and flowers sent: thank you friends and strangers! As Rebecca Schiffman writes in the Brooklyn Rail (link to full article in bio), “Exiting the show, I felt a newfound connection to these artists; while art and artists often seem elevated and separated from visitors in museums, this exhibition humanizes their experiences, making their journeys feel more relatable and inspiring.” The show is up through July 21 and is on two floors. @cantorarts @stanfordarts @brooklynrail @rebeccat__ @studio.sandyrodriguez @larrybellstudio @genesisbelanger @jeffrune #barbarakruger #chuckramirez @ragenmoss @nielsen_cmnart
