The route between the #VitraCampus and the centre of Weil am Rhein became a new attraction in 2021: the Vitra-Designweg. Leading from the tram stop to the Campus, the pedestrian path is now marked by twelve columns showcasing a selection of #Vitra Miniatures – scale models of classic furniture designs. Designer @ronanbouroullec talks about the development of the Vitra Designweg. Have you had a chance to discover the Oudolf Garten on the #VitraCampus ? For once it is not buildings that are sprouting up on the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein, but plants: situated between the VitraHaus and the production facility by Álvaro Siza, the 4000 m2 garden created by Dutch designer @PietOudolf in 2020 is now blossoming in all its varied splendour. Two projects in the garden by @ronanbouroullec and @erwanbouroullec invite visitors to prolong their visit to the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein: Ruisseau is a narrow channel carved in a marble base, filled with running water. Ring is a circular platform made of galvanised steel, which appears to float above the ground. Encircling a cherry tree, it serves as collective bench. #Vitra #PietOudolf

#KazuoShinohara (1925–2006) is considered one of the most important Japanese architects from the latter half of the twentieth century, along with Kenzo Tange. His work subsequently influenced architects such as Toyo Ito and Kazuyo Sejima, but is still little known internationally. A masterpiece from Shinohara’s so-called First Style is the Umbrella House built in Tokyo in 1961, which has been reconstructed on the #VitraCampus in Weil am Rhein. As the Umbrella House was to be demolished to give way to a roadbuilding project at its previous location in Tokyo, #Vitra decided to acquire the house and safeguard it for posterity. Built using a wooden post-and-beam construction method, the house was carefully dismantled in the summer of 2020 and separated into its individual parts. The wooden structure made of Japanese cypress, Japanese pine and Oregon pine was securely packed along with the other components and shipped to Weil am Rhein. Reconstruction on the Vitra Campus commenced in September 2021 in close coordination with the Tokyo Institute of Technology and was completed in summer 2022.

The Tane Garden House was designed by the Paris-based Japanese architect #TsuyoshiTane and built by local craftsmen using sustainable and, wherever possible, locally sourced materials. The house is very compact and can accommodate around 8 people. Intended for use by Vitra’s garden enthusiasts and the crew of the Oudolf Garten, it contains a small coffee corner and storage space for gardening tools. The house is also suitable as a meeting room and for workshops on the topic of gardens. A kitchen garden accessible to #Vitra employees was also created alongside the building. Learn more at the link in bio.

A new addition to the #VitraCampus architecture: Khudi Bari In Bangladesh, floods are becoming more frequent as a result of climate change, forcing countless numbers of people to look for a new home. Against this backdrop, Bangladeshi architect #MarinaTabassum and her team have developed the Khudi Bari, or small house: a low-cost structure that can be erected, dismantled, transported and reassembled elsewhere by the residents themselves. A Khudi Bari was constructed on the #Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein as an example of a certain architectural mindset and a concrete response to problems exacerbated by the climate crisis.

@Sabine_Marcelis opens up new perspectives on living with a bold installation in the #VitraHaus Loft on 12 June 2024, using a cascading colour scheme. The Dutch artist and designer developed new colours and covers for two iconic #Vitra products by Danish designer @vernerpantonofficial . These have been launched in a limited edition as installation spin-offs. ‘The philosophy behind the design closely mirrors how we created our family home,’ explains Marcelis who has previously collaborated with the @VitraDesignMuseum in ‘Colour Rush!’ – an exhibition where she organised iconic Vitra archive pieces by colour in 2022. ‘It features a large open space divided into functional zones, delineated by colour. We then blended my creations with those of other designers, artists, and of course, Vitra furniture to create a cohesive whole.’ Working closely with the team at Vitra, the large rectangular space on the top floor of the public VitraHaus has been transformed into a smartly organised yet highly imaginative showcase of how colour and design can be combined with compelling results. ‘The VitraHaus Loft is the perfect canvas to display the diversity of Vitra furniture,’ explains Till Weber, Creative Director of Interiors & Scenography at Vitra. ‘It provides a collage, where we can mix and match furniture for the characters that live within it. The tones and hues Sabine has used are recognisable from the natural, organic world and they have a rich interaction with the various spaces – things are connected but do not all perfectly match.’ He adds that the loft floor has been designed with real warmth and personality to feel like a proper home interior, rather than a gallery, and Marcelis has achieved this through a rich layering of design, materials and colour.
