Duke Softball’s Employee & Professor Appreciation Day so touched instructor Maria Finnegan, seen here in the Duke hat, that she brought the concept to her son’s high school baseball team. Because Finnegan was invited to Duke Softball’s appreciation event, she created a similar event for the teachers of players on her son’s baseball team at Cedar Ridge High School varsity team in Hillsborough. “I know how I felt at Duke, so I thought if teachers can feel that way, why not make their day a little brighter?” she said. Associate Professor John Board recently took @dukeoit colleagues on an insider tour of @dukeuniversity ’s campus. What started as a team bonding activity born out of the idea of bringing together staff who primarily work remote has continued for the sheer popularity of learning more about Duke from one of its most knowledgeable and entertaining employees. “Gape in awe,” says Board during the tours as he points out 46 years’ worth of knowledge with his signature wry humor. Here are just a few of our recent #DukeTimeOff photo submissions! Akiko Chiba (@akikochiba_md ) shared her “lovely trip to Paris.” 🇫🇷 Kenneth Mitchell recently visited Italy with his mother. “This solitary gondola seemed like such a quintessentially Venetian scene, and also captured how much my mother enjoyed our time in Italy,” he said about his photo from Venice. “I feel very fortunate to have been able to spend my time off this way.” 🇮🇹 Korrin Cheatwood (@rinthepisces ) stuck closer to home. She and her two friends took a paddle board and kayak break at Falls Lake in North Carolina. 🇺🇸 Don’t forget to submit your #DukeTimeOff photos, too! You could win prizes from from @washingtondukeinn , @dukelemurcenter and @dukeuniversitystores ! Click the link in our bio for more information!

Christa Rutledge, Nina King, Thomas Davis and Imer Ramadanovic still lean on lessons they learned in programs from Duke Learning & Organization Development. Christa Rutledge (@casualchrista ), who joined Duke in 2008, completed the Front Line Supervisors Program last year. She has incorporated key lessons with her 11-person team to provide learning and growth opportunities. 🔵😈 In the yearlong Duke Leadership Academy program, Vice President and Director of @dukeathletics Nina King (@ninakingduke ) collaborated with colleagues from @DukeLibraries and @DukeU_NursingSchl to explore Duke’s real-world issues. “Given our individual professional experiences and our different backgrounds, we could still come together to solve a common problem,” King said. “While our stories may be different, a lot of the challenges we face are the same.” 🪴 🙌 While managing a Performance Services team, @DukeHealth ’s Thomas Davis (@thomas_davis336 ) was drawn to the Duke Management Academy, which is designed to support the growth of mid-level managers. 👨‍🍳 ✏️ 😁 Imer Ramadanovic credits his career change from food prep to program administration to the Foundational Skills Program at Duke. “Everything they taught me I use every single day,” Ramadanovic said. “All of the essentials I needed, I learned in that program.” Read more at the link in our bio!

A parking lot next to Duke University Hospital is home to 22 different species of grasses and wildflowers planted by the Sarah P. Duke Gardens. The tiny “Pocket Prairie” habitat in the H Lot demonstrates that Southeastern native prairie plants can be an attractive, low maintenance alternative to sod in underutilized urban areas such as parking lots, which are extreme environments. And unlike sod, these pocket prairies can also be beneficial to pollinators such a birds and butterflies. “We have been excited and amazed by the results,” says Annabel Renwick, a curator at Sarah P. Duke Gardens. 🐦🌻🦋 @dukeuniversityhospital @sarahpdukegardens

Did you know that Duke has a farm? Last week, we visited the @dukecampusfarm in preparation for an upcoming story. This one-acre working farm, owned and operated by Duke University, produces sustainably grown produce and offers food systems education to the Duke community and neighbors. The farm's mission is to inspire positive change in the food system. 🍅 🌱 🌼 While we were there, volunteers from the Nicholas School of the Environment (@dukeenvironment ) helped spread mulch, dig potatoes and weed the native plant garden. @dukeuniversity
