Nikes, acrylic on tablet screen, 2024. I'd always wanted to paint music meaningful to me onto a tablet, and it took me some time to choose the specific song. When Blond came out I didn't really like it, especially given how much I'd loved Channel Orange. It felt too disjointed, I didn't love the high pitched vocals, many tracks lacked any percussive elements, and it was more avant garde than I liked. Then in December 2022 as my 14 yr relationship came to a fiery end, I began revisiting this album and it just hit so differently. There was a deep emotional resonance, especially w this song Nikes, as it opens the album and just fucking slaps. The melancholy, joy, vulnerability, and introspection on this album encapsulated all of my feelings at that time as well as now. I'll always think back to that traumatic time when I hear this. The last 1.5 yrs have been a whirlwind, while my personal life was completely shattered, my professional life took on a new trajectory and I fully buried myself in the work. I'm incredibly proud of the work I've produced and the personal growth thats occurred, but there's still so much more to do and undo. I rarely ever take breaks and I'm generally too hard on myself, ambition can be a double edged sword. I'm really looking forward to leaning into the rest and relaxation of my summer off, and take time for myself to recharge. Emotionally I'm ready for my next chapter, whatever that may be, but the studio won't be idle for too long. #yikuigu

We hope you enjoy this video of Marian Bailey and Yikui (Coy) Gu describing their collaboration for ‘TEAMWERK’, currently on view at COMMONWEAL, and how they chose to explore materiality as it relates to modern technology. Bailey and Gu speak about how they formed their collaboration, and the challenges they faced to unite their practices. Marian Bailey (they/them) is a self-taught visual artist whose work explores themes of memory, history, and identity through the use of digital and physical media. Bailey’s works are often characterized by their use of bold colors and dynamic color blocking. Central to Bailey’s artistic practice is a fascination with the ways in which individuals and communities connect to work together in order to persist into the future. As a member of the Black diaspora, Bailey often thinks about the stories, recipes, music and cultural contexts that traveled across land and water, transforming while remaining true to their essence. Drawing on personal and collective histories, their work investigates how memories and narratives are formed and transmitted across time and space. Yikui (Coy) Gu was born in 1983 in Nantong, China and emigrated to the United States at the age of seven, growing up in Albany, NY. He has a BFA from Long Island University and a MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He has exhibited his work nationally in New York, Miami, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Boston, and St. Louis; and internationally in London, Berlin, and Siena, Italy. He has been an artist in residence at the School of Visual Arts, and has lectured at Tyler School of Art, Alfred University, Gettysburg College, and Fontbonne University. He has been reviewed in Hyperallergic, the Washington Post, KunstForum International, the Philadelphia Inquirer, Denver Art Review, and the Yale Daily News. #philadelphia #artists #collaboration #teamwork #teamwerk #ceramics #painting #sculpture #technology

I'm incredibly honored that these two pieces are joining the permanent collection of @alfreduniversity_ !!re!!_039;s Scholes Library. The self portrait was the first time I painted onto the screen of a device, purely as an experiment, and the second piece, a portrait of the great Chicago ceramic artist @lolaogbara , was painted during our residency at Alfred University in summer 2023. So happy they'll have a good home in a great collection at a wonderful institution! Big thank you to folks below for making this happen! @stephemcmahon @heythatsfantastic @patbrennanpics @ziho_chen 1. Self Portrait, 2021, gouache on smartphone screen. 2. Lola, 2023, acrylic on smartphone screen. #yikuigu
