#OnThisDay in 1897, Swiss cutler Karl Elsener was granted a patent for what would later be known as the Swiss Army Knife.
The knife’s compact case houses all sorts of handy gadgets, including a screwdriver, a can opener, and a corkscrew. So while you could wield the knife in combat if you had to, it’s really more of a tool than a weapon.
