Her confidence and disobedience is clear off the page, and a rebel from this separated society of mortals and these god-like beings, the Descended. And while clearly, something is different about Diem that everyone around her tries to shelter from knowing, it wasn’t until the last significant events of the book did I become invested in her differences. I think this is merely the fact that I myself did not gravitate towards Diem as a profound character until her interactions with Luther. To not give anything away, I think his pinpoint in her story made the most amount of sense, and I can only suspect that we will be seeing how he impacts her later on. Especially when it comes to people around her who want her to be someone that she isn't, and we might have a battle of who we are destined to be versus who we want to be. I think the reasons why she is a healer also makes sense when it comes to an event at the very end, making it clear that not only is she destined for it, she might even be good at it. Review: A Far Wilder Magic @allisonhsaft ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ • • • • • A Far Wilder Magic grew very personal with me with the family relationships, especially between Margaret and her mom, Evelyn. Even though I didn't have exactly that relationship, I felt the fear that Margaret felt and seeing the consuming effect of one's personal obsession/thoughts. I also related to her a lot when she believed that alchemy was the root of evil, the thing that changed her mom to something she didn't recognize anymore. Beyond the sniffles I accumulated in this book, I found that the whole implementation of religion was fascinating. What the world of New Albion may have felt lacked if one wants a full-fledged fantasy world, which this is not necessarily that, you will get a unique insight into the bigotry, acceptance, cowardly actions, and learning what to stand up for. And this contrast of the meaning of God between each religion, and then the truth of it all. I also loved how realistic in a way this story was! When the steamy moments happen, it wasn't like another smut story, which I am not opposed to, but it was real and relatable and in it's own way exciting that plastered a soft recognizable smile on my face when reading the good parts. And this fear of loving or being in love also didn't feel childish but understandable and something I think we all have felt. I definitely see the similarities in terms of the difference of mortals and the god-like descended. I feel kind of in the middle with this book, I'm not wowed, but it's not a bad read. Hopefully, as it progresses more, I will start enjoying it more with some mention of a certain disappearance, how the prince is or isn't involved, and this mysterious powerful being at the beginning. Before, it was odd to me that this soldier would give in so easily to a palace brat, but the oddity made me see that the space in which they carved for themselves was just them being true to who they are. And anywhere beyond that they mask themselves as protection. They are the same, they have to be meant for each other. But beyond that, the pulls of political encounters and exchanges was really well executed, and I absolutely loved the end, it had me thinking of it even when finished after a couple of days, which is a sign of a good book! Getting introduced to Margaret and Wes shows just how different their worlds are, from this isolated country girl to this city boy, as we see how both meet in this middle. But with the lurking sense of the Hala, trying to understand it's meaning with the lore around them is still a mystery, as they have to have a deeper meaning that hasn't been revealed yet. The concept of religion and trauma have been really developed and the parts I like the most of Saft's world.
