Here are my top tips on how to photograph people when traveling without being intrusive:
1. Prioritise Connection Over a Photograph
To capture a meaningful photograph, it’s not enough to use a zoom lens and snap a picture from afar. Instead, build a positive connection with your subject. Show genuine interest in what they do, and this will naturally come across in your interaction. Learn a few words in the local language, like „hello” or „this is beautiful,” and smile. Start by photographing what they do and then include them in your shots.
2. Invest Time
Some of the great photographers spend days building relationships with their subjects, proving their good intentions and gaining trust. Showing up consistently can demonstrate that you’re not a threat and are genuinely interested in their story.
3. Capture the Right Expression
Take numerous photos to capture the perfect moment that truly reflects your subject’s situation and emotions. Patience and persistence can lead to capturing the essence of the scene.
4. Compensate for Their Time
Sometimes people might ask for a tip after you take their picture. Always try to compensate them fairly, either with a tip or by creating a positive experience. Showing appreciation for what they do can be more rewarding than money, leading to a more genuine interaction.
5. Better to Apologise Than Miss the Moment
If you see a fleeting moment, capture it quickly. Asking for permission might result in a posed shot or risk being declined. This approach is suitable for respectful situations, not for intruding on someone’s privacy.
6. Embrace the Awkwardness
Talking to strangers can be challenging, and you might not always get a positive response. However, like any skill, you’ll improve over time. Keep practicing, and interactions will become smoother.
