#KimGordon @kimletgordon (the only member of Sonic Youth I have not worked with) gave an amazing concert tonight at Central Park
@summerstage
She’s further prove that even at 71 you can still have things to say and you can say them with great power and presence!
Her band is absolutely killer and the rhythm section in particular is sooo tight and tuned into each other, it’s just great to watch and listen to these interlocking drums and bass grooves by
#MadiVogt @madivogt and
#CamillaCharlesworth @camillabasskilla .
#SarahRegister @_sarah_register adds all the noisy and distorted textures, and Kim adds to that further on a few of the songs…
What I also really liked is the production and the sounds.
#SterlingLaws @sterlinglaws (her previous drummer) is the mastermind behind a lot of those soundscapes and I loved the dark and eerie approach of a lot of these tunes. It’s almost like industrial music that intertwines with noise-rock and with a healthy dose of hip hop / trap influences. Kim’s characteristic singing style is perfect above all of this and she even plays around with the most overused vocal effect in trap music: the exaggerated autotune, also known as the Cher effect or how T-Pain ruined singing for everyone… I think this is the first time since Cher I actually liked the use of it and the creativity of the new approach to this typically-studio-only effect applied to this context. Bravo to Kim and to
#SummerStage @summerstage for the booking!
Magical breezy perfect summer night in the park!
