Noice Noises No.1 (𝘓𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘪𝘯 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘧𝘪𝘭𝘦) In 2018, I was getting kinda burned out on Spotify. While I enjoyed the “unlimited” access to every artist imaginable, I listened to the same thing repeatedly in my studio. In the past, when this happened, I would swap out a different CD, scroll to another album on my iPod (click-click-click on the scroll wheel), or put on a DEVO record. Spotify doesn’t have the same tactility, and browsing on the app left me bored and uninspired. I noticed that streaming music often produced weird “shuffle loops” when I tried to randomize my* music. I needed some fresh tunes, so I went music hunting. I saw a new album, CZ-5000 Sounds & Sequences, by Satoshi & Makoto. Wonderful songs filled with lush textures and sonic landscapes, these compositions quickly captured me. The songs are collections of works by Japanese twin brothers Satoshi and Makoto. They were recorded throughout the ‘90s, and the tracks were produced exclusively using CASIO CZ-5000 synthesizers. This instrumental constraint is anything but restrictive, as the sounds swirl and create harmonious textures. On a different note, I was delving deep into the Toyota Production System and Taiichi Ohno’s writings. Japanese culture has always fascinated me, and I began to notice a trend of my interests congregating around Japan. Toyota’s manufacturing approach and the meditative, plucky sounds from Japan were like medicine to me in 2018. It felt like falling in love again, and each artist I found would lead me to another new path. I hadn’t made a mixtape or playlist since my CD days, so I decided to try it on Spotify. This new playlist became known as Noice Noises. I am a professed believer in sharing influences and Open SourceⓈ. So, these playlists are a look behind the curtain to show music that has shaped my tastes. A few years back, I found the DJ Kicks project by !K7, where musicians and DJs release tracks they kick. I hope visual artists can steal this concept to be more open with their influences and share them vs. hoarding them behind their self-made moat.

Yellow Ochre is my favorite color. I only printed one of the Niche Noise sweatshirts in this color. I wanted to test this garment for an upcoming limited Sweatshirt™ run and liked how the red/blue logo clashes. This has quickly become my favorite sweatshirt, and @jenniferneyer keeps trying to steal it. It’s crazy cozy, and the fit is just right. Designing this garment mirrors my approach to sampling and composing for my new track, Pneumonia. I start with mining through my taste and snipping out things I love. Over time, the collection allows for collaging things together that would have otherwise lived apart. Collaging is a terrific cheat code for uncovering and producing new work. The SamplesⓈ: • NationaLease logo (reworked) • Raglan Fleece (Bella + Canvas 3901) • 🎹 @elijahknapp • Hospital voice memos • Medical training cassette • Spidey Super Stories LP (1977) • Coughing voice memo • PBS documentary • Siri (British) • Pope John Paul II LP (1984) • Thoughtless remarks • PO-35 (robot)

♫ Niche Noise is a collaborative, experimental music outlet to collage sounds and ideas. I take inspiration from all genres of music and noises I hear throughout my daily life. The project is a way to express my tastes through sampling, composing, remixing, storytelling, publishing, and product design.
