Maanga Ooruga | மாங்காய் ஊறுகா
I loved my school summers, the longest vacation of the year which meant I would be visiting my grandparents in my native, I could go to swimming classes, play with my cousins all day long. Summer meant my grandparents would buy me semiya ice, rose milk, vanilla softie and there would be umpteen supply of rasna and buttermilk in the fridge.
Summers meant it was time to pluck mangoes from the trees around the house.
Even though we didn’t pickle it at our house, we had a very kind neighbour who used to do it for us.
That aunty would attentively pick the best mangoes of the lot, dunk them in the water for them to be cleaned.
She cut them using an “aruvamani” instead of a knife.
She would then add salt, chilli powder, fenugreek - mustard powder and then mix it. Followed by the “Thalippu”, the minute it hit the mangoes, the aroma filled her kitchen and I would start drooling. After she was done, she transferred it into a neatly cleaned jar for it rest a bit.
You then pair it with some fresh curd and rice with a pinch of salt and gobble it all down. Sorted.
This shoot is a small tribute for my childhood summers.
