This was followed by Impact Producer Nadia Denton sharing her work on the film "For Maria," delving into its exploration of post-partum depression and Aloke Devichand of Mindhouse Productions provided superb insight with his presentation on 'The Elephant Whisperers,' a captivating documentary journey from conception to the Oscars! When you’re away from home, you find interesting and strange ways to feel connected. For me, cooking and re-creating the journey of a food is a doorway to the history and journey of that land. Lately, I have struggled to feel and find my idea of India. As I was making Kaju Katli this morning (for Holi), I debated which theory of its origin sounded more plausible. Originating in the Deccan in the 16th C by a Maratha chef inspired by his favourite Persian sweet Halwa-e-Farsi, or under the Mughals in the 17th C during Jehangir’s rule inspired by a Sikh Guru. It didn’t matter. The first bite of the soft, sweet mithai had the history of the Marathas, Persians, Mughals, and Sikhs, while celebrating a Hindu festival in our Jain-Christian house. All across India this weekend sweets with similar mixed and wonderful histories will be eaten. For now, that’s the idea of India I will relish.
