Week 4 was so much fun! Residents worked on developing their professional interests, while also finding time to be a little silly - it’s a balance! Our fourth Evenings @ Avaloch concert featured Arun Ramamurthy & Trina Basu, The Moanin’ Frogs, Hannah de Priest & Shelby Yamin, and Alexa Stier & Derek Hartman. The concert was hosted and recorded by Jane Cormier with local radio station WKXL. Join us again this Friday for another great concert!

“Music is a reflection of the hearts evolution. To communicate in that invisible realm invites us, both musician and listener, to reach into ourselves, to seek to know our own heart and speak of that which we discover.”

Thank you @avalochfarmmusicinstitute for an unforgettable week of music making, exploration, friendship, excellent food and a whole lot of shenanigans. A few more memories from the week! We are excited about the future of our collaboration with the incomparable @msalkindpearl !
We'll be back in July for @composers_conference and we cannot wait!! See you soon, Avaloch! 😎🎷🎻
Weeks 2 and 3 featured a wide variety of artists in residence who were delighted to develop and share their crafts. Our second and third Evenings @ Avaloch concerts included performances by Barbara Cassidy Band, Kieva McGonagle, Mike Harmon, Haroon Samuel, ACRONYM, Yunwen Chen & Elias Dagher, Ashley Bathgate, Mary Bonhag & Ruth Cunningham, and Go: Organic Orchestra. Each group shared incredibly diverse musical experiences with each other and the community. This week, we are looking forward to hosting the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble. Join us in the coming weeks for more captivating performances, listed in our bio!
Residency Notes: Day V
Taking a moment for reflection as we begin to wind down after a wonderfully intense week of work at the Avaloch Farm Music Institute.
This smaller ensemble setting - there were nine of us - was a new experience. From the get go, there was a strong feeling of family, and the intimacy of this setting allowed us to open up the organic music concepts in some new ways; to ask questions that illuminated the ‘familiar’ in transformative ways. We were all challenged - musicians and composer - and we all came away with a renewed sense of purpose as an ensemble.
And we met such wonderful artists here, listened to others’ work and shared our own; making new friends along the way and opening doorways to new collaborations post-residency.
It is important to say that none of this could have happened without the warm hospitality and institutional care of Avaloch. Every aspect - from our accommodations to our rehearsal spaces; from the insanely delicious food and loving care of the chef and kitchen staff to the support of Ashley Bathgate and her staff - was seamlessly integrated and seemed effortless (it was not!). Truly, this is a deeply intentional place, one that catalyses creativity in a most marvelous and generative fashion.
Look for the music we recorded to be released by Adam Rudolph @huvibes63 on the Meta Records label. Those of you who know our work will be surprised by what we found together.
