Blight reading series
#1 (Spring)
Friday 6:30 pm
Meet the writers:
Carter St Hogan* is a trans nonbinary writer, musician, and educator and the author of One or Several Deserts (11:11 Press, 2022). S/he is also the author of the fiction chapbook Little Animal (Awst Press, 2016) and has short stories published in Best American Experimental Writing, McSweeney’s, Puerto del Sol, FANZINE, and elsewhere. Often referencing Catholic mythology, their work relies on our desires for poetics, beauty, and seduction to examine the ways in which marginalized mystics have been culturally, politically, and socially exploited throughout Western history. Their work touches on themes of mysticism, insanity, pain, geo-eroticism, social isolation, and trans(sexual) liberation.
Carter earned their MFA in Literary Arts from Brown University, where s/he won the John Hawkes and Robert Coover, Feldman, and Francis Mason Harris Prizes in Fiction. They are also a proud graduate of The Warman School. S/he has been supported by residencies with Stove Works (Chattanooga, TN), Surel’s Place (Boise, ID), HIVE Arts Collective (Austin, TX), and the Disquiet International Program (Lisbon, Portugal), and with funding from New Music USA, Bluegrass Pride, Tin House, and Brown University. They now live in Austin, TX, where s/he performs “homespun blasphemer queergrass” as
@creekbedcarter , grows okra, swims in sewer creeks, and does 8,000 odd jobs for friends.
