🌱 a part of a new one called Growing. we’ve been in a swirl of strawberries and jam the last couple days thanks to the good bounty of @squarerootsfarm .
it felt good to get the canning pot out of the cellar. it’s my grandma’s and this is the first year I can’t call to tell her what I’m making in it. she’ll have a batch of strawberry preserves made in her honor 💕
dedicating this one to the sweet couple that helped me get a nursing baby, a guitar and a stroller through airport security. to any kind stranger who helps a traveling parent… you are gracious gold.
Next up on our performer spotlights is @courtneyhartman and @michael.daves Don’t miss them at the culminating night of the 2024 Blue Ridge Guitar Camp!
Courtney Hartman is an acclaimed guitarist, singer and writer from the foothills of Colorado. Acoustic Guitar Magazine recognizes her as a “distinctive guitar stylist... and a songwriter that delights and disturbs” while PopMatters hailed her most recent release as “a delicate light glistening softly in the darkness.” In 2014 she received a GRAMMY nomination for her work with folk quintet, Della Mae, and in 2017 Americana Music Association nominated her for Instrumentalist of the Year. Bill Frisell, Mike Campbell and Buffy St. Marie are a few of the artists Courtney has created with as she continues to collaborate across cultures and disciplines, always seeking to bring voice to the hushed and inexpressible. Over the last decade, Courtney has represented the US State Department in 28 countries through music diplomacy and outreach. Her teaching work includes fifteen years of private instruction experience as well as faculty positions at Rockygrass Academy, Swannanoa Guitar Week Gathering, Miles of Music and Grand Targhee Music Camp.
“Michael Daves is a Grammy-nominated New York-based bluegrass, country, and rock musician whose unruly interpretations of American roots music standards have won him a place of almost fanatical admiration as a “renegade traditionalist.” His regular Tuesday night performances at the Rockwood Music Hall are the stuff of New York legend. Daves has shared stages and recorded with Chris Thile, Steve Martin, Nickel Creek, Aoife O’Donovan, Tony Trischka, and Rosanne Cash as well.”

though I love to journal and it’s an anchor in my day-to-day, I’ve never been one to keep a practice journal. these days, practicing is more like playing when I’m able than any sort of discipline. but in the mornings, as often as I can, I step outside to play for a brief moment and these are some of the lessons the garden has taught me about playing.
they are personal yes, and possibly illegible 🙃 but they felt freely shared with me and so I’m sharing them with you too. the closest thing I have to a music journal…
a small melody for the afternoon, it made me smile and get teary at the same time. I’m sure you know…
you’re welcome name this one, if a name comes to your mind 🌱
reminding my fingers and brain how to play this one 😊
next weekend I’ll be up at the @northhillspringmkt playing songs. it’s one of my favorite EC spring happenings 🌸
First farmers market! I’m so proud of my husband 💙 John has worked tirelessly growing these seedlings to share with our community. He cares deeply about restoring the earth and our bodies through native plants and edible perennials and everything he’s selling he started from seed or propagated from mother plants nurtured in our yard over the last few years. Can you tell I’m beaming ☺️
Give him a follow at @perennialyield if you’re interested in food forests and native plants or anything related to growing good things. He’ll have more up there soon!
And come visit at the EC farmers market, every Saturday 7:30-1pm ☀️
a tune for the afternoon and a poem for May, my favorite month of the year 🌷
ASKING, IN MAY
What is it you crave
beyond your own wholeness
What makes you ache
at the turn of day
when mind, muscle and spirit
are subtle and most awake,
even piercing
Haven’t we got what we asked for
time and time again, still
we never tire of asking
We live and to live
is to ask for more – more breath
more fodder, more love
more desire –
for lack of water the river
is only a footpath
or a road.
I’ll be teaching this summer at few camps around the country (and Italy!)…. a couple are still accepting participants!
I think it’s such a special thing to gather up and learn and pass along our music traditions. Acoustic music camps were a staple for my siblings and I growing up. The workshop tents and campgrounds were where I first found a love of playing and making music with friends. (Bless my sweet Dad who drove us around the country and stayed up long past midnight while we went from one campfire jam to the next 🙃❤️)
