“Gone Away” was released on all music streaming platforms about 3 years ago, as part of my instrumental concept album “Moving On.” I tried to use a blues-rock vocabulary to illustrate the various complex emotions related to loss, without lyrics.
At the start of this clip is what is essentially the “chorus” and to me it feels like those moments where you are completely engrossed in reliving your most precious memories in your head—like a moment with a loved one. To me, the last line of the lead guitar on that chorus sounds like it’s saying “…but they’re gone,” and that’s when you snap back to reality and realize you are sitting alone in a messy room, and that person is dead. The piece goes back and forth between thee moments until the guitar solo breaks in, like a tumultuous internal dialogue on how to deal with the pain.
It’s probably both the darkest and prettiest moment on the album. And it exists as a setup for the climax, “Moving On.” It was definitely the easiest to write and easiest to produce.
It’s the only piece on the album that just fell into place. It’s also the only one where the Rhythm IS the lead and in that way, I think it may be the most well written.
