Established in 2004, KBC, takes place every 3rd Thursday at eyedrum art & music gallery from 8pm-11:30 In its various incarnations over the years, Kirkwood Ballers Club has created an environment where generations of avant-garde musical energy and talent have flourished throughout periods of existence and inactivity. During its early years at Lenny’s, a parade of local punk, hip-hop, jazz, and indie rock musicians would sign up to perform including everyone from garage punks and avant-garde musicians Cole Alexander of the Black Lips and Bradford Cox of Deerhunter to Grammy-winning saxophone player Kebbi Williams of Tedeschi Trucks Band. All utilized the format to create music in-the-moment that expanded upon their typical repertoires. “The Kirkwood Ballers Club was always a place of pure freedom,” says Kebbi Williams, who often showed up with large ensembles of musicians who lit up the room with an explosive free-form skronking jazz set. “I learned from Kirkwood Ballers Club at Lenny’s and from the scene at Eyedrum how to be free,” Williams goes on to say. “I saw some of the most original and provocative things at the Kirkwood Ballers Club, and it totally affected my life as an artist.” WHEN: Every Third Thursday of the month from 8-11:30pm WHERE: eyedrum art & music gallery 515 Ralph David Abernathy Blvd, Atlanta, GA 30312 - eyedrum.org

Join the vibrant and exploratory #KirkwoodBallersClub , the avant-garde monthly forum held every third Thursday at eyedrum art & music gallery. This month, on May 16, we are proud to present a special guest who embodies the adventurous spirit that defines KBC: #WashboardXT . Washboard XT, the artistic alias of Newman Taylor Baker, born in 1943, revolutionizes the washboard as an electro-acoustic musical instrument. By employing expended shotgun shells on each finger, he enhances his instrument with microphones and effects pedals, creating a sound of remarkable presence and versatility. His approach treats the washboard like a hand drum, focusing on touch and the interaction between shell and surface to produce diverse textures, colors, and articulations. Over his long career as an internationally esteemed jazz drummer, Newman has interpreted drum parts for renowned composers such as Henry Threadgill, Diedre Murray, Leroy Jenkins, McCoy Tyner, Billy Harper, Sam Rivers, and Matthew Shipp. His innovative technique allows his washboard to complement a broad spectrum of musical genres. Also appearing: Ipek Eginli Iriamu Kenito The Harmonic Continuum Jordi Lara / Matt Vu Gh8st_dr4mm3r Mark Warren Nortnode (N.S.R.+ Vela Oma) jonathan’s basement B O R A X DATE: Thursday, May 16 LOCATION: eyedrum art & music gallery EVENT: Kirkwood Ballers Club TIME: 8PM; performances begin at 8:30PM COST: Free Funding for this program is provided by the Fulton County Board of Commissioners. We’re thrilled to introduce you to our special guest for #kirkwoodballersclub this month WASHBOARD XT aka Newman Taylor Baker After an illustrious career as an internationally esteemed jazz drummer interpreting compositions for notable composers like Henry Threadgill, Diedre Murray, Leroy Jenkins, McCoy Tyner, Billy Harper, Sam Rivers, and Matthew Shipp, Newman Taylor Baker encountered the washboard in 2010. This encounter profoundly changed his life. The connection between his paternal grandfather, Rev. Dr. T. Nelson Baker, the only former enslaved student to achieve a Bachelor of Divinity (1893) and PhD in Philosophy (1903) from Yale University, and the washboard—popular during the lifetime of Rev. Dr. Baker—has fueled Newman’s current creative path. Now, Newman is a passion-driven washboarder directing Washboard XT, his concept of 21st-century music for the acoustic and electronic washboard. Newman has always been captivated by the wide dynamic and emotional range of the drum, a fascination that began when he played Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” on his record player at the age of three. Since then, it has been his mission to showcase the beauty, intensity, sensitivity, power, and emotion of drums at all dynamic levels. Touch is central to his musical expression; on the washboard, Newman conjures a variety of sounds and textures through the angle of the shells, the weight of his arm, and the number of fingers he uses. The same principle of touch applies when he uses sticks on the drum.
