Thank you @factmag for capturing part of my performance at @intonalfestival this past Spring. Definitely a tour highlight for me to work with the wonderful folks at this amazing festival and so thankful for their hosting me in residency for two weeks prior. This performance entitled 'Disruption and Epokhē was inspired partly by the words of the late Bernard Stiegler: “The age of disruption is the epoch of the absence of epoch.” Filmed by Jonathan Gyllrnör and Henrik Hellström 🔗 in the bio ---- For this year’s Intonal, Mao presents a new piece inspired partly by the words of the late Bernard Stiegler: “The age of disruption is the epoch of the absence of epoch.” As Mao explains, “Current technical systems are preventing our expression of will and what we are left with is a fragmentary sense of existence. The incomprehensibility of our times, faltering mutualities, diminishing worlds, a lack of growth in transgenerational experience – all lead to an unbearable psychic weight and an inability to conceive of new forms of life together.” An extension of Silvercoat the throng, which was composed during lockdown in 2020, the artist felt the need to resist the urge to fill the space, instead observing deeply how absence gives dimension and form to our lives. With that work and now the performance, she asks: “If light does not break, if shadows are not cast, how are we to process and then disseminate all that we have experienced? And in these current modes of existence, will we experience an epoch together ever again?” Preceding his death in 2020, Stiegler himself said of our current isolation, “It [the pandemic] should be an opportunity to revalue the silence, the rhythms that we give ourselves…”

Thank you to everyone who listened, gave/wrote a kind word or incl "Silvercoat" on a mix. Through my grief, I hope that I was able to translate that lack does not necessarily entail deficit. That there is a need to give space to this moment, rather than try to straddle and control it. Special thank you to all my collaborators. A great comfort to reach across time and space and work together this past year. Video by @en_pe 💜🧡

★ ★ ★ HIRO KONE ★ ★ ★ Hiro Kone is the alias of Nicky Mao. She uses a combination of hardware, synths, and modular to cultivate her sound - a visceral meditation on rhythm, noise, and melody that has seen her release on leading experimental labels including DAIS and BANK Records. No stranger to manipulating macabre disorientations into enchanting new shapes, her music exposes the unsettling and sublime. Her most recent full length release, ‘Silvercoat the throng’ was described by Resident Advisor’s Dash Lewis, as “Beautiful and harrowing, falling apart and building anew.” The album captures Hiro Kone at the peak of their powers, alchemizing disruption and decomposition into regenerative interior worlds: “Within the darkness and absence is an opportunity for discovery.” Bridging neoclassical, jazz, noise and percussive elements, Hiro Kone’s world is one that unfolds and changes over time, rejecting genre for undiscovered potential. ‘Silvercoat’ follows 2019’s release ‘A Fossil Begins To Bray’, which was described as her most personally narrative work to date. The album uses equal parts melodic sculpture and striking absence to propel a “journey of discovery and self-analysis, proposing a potential reorientation towards absence in hopes of illuminating potential futures.” As impactful and rich as any contemporary electronic music with political intent, the record explores the persistent threat of techno-fascism and the potential of reinterpreting our recollection and interpretation of existence. 2018’s release ‘Pure Expenditure’,  was widely acclaimed by publications including The Quietus (“Hiro Kone cements her position as one of the finest electronic musicians working today”), and Boomkat, who celebrated the album as “stunning.” The record’s live iteration, premiered at the 2018 edition of Berlin’s Atonal Festival, won equally enthusiastic plaudits from Resident Advisor, who selected it as one of the top five performances of the event, owing to a blend of “pulsating industrial rhythms to quiet bouts of ambience… the message comes across in the music’s sense of purpose.” LINKS FOR ALL ARTISTS IN BIO #FOURTHWORLDNYC #FOURTHWORLDTENYEAR

Honored to present a rare 4D set of “Silvercoat the throng” this Saturday in Vancouver for Mother Cloud at @lobestudio_ . The album itself in its simplest form is about “possibility rescued from darkness.” Those who attend this Saturday, I ask that you consider with me what this can look like, and what going forward, one needs to do to reorient themselves to make this possible, to go beyond the imagined, to offer true concrete and steadfast support for a free Palestine, a free Congo, a free Haiti, a free Sudan. Please take this moment to recommit yourselves to what is possible. This is beginning of the future, the rest of our time together. And we have never been closer to freedom. 🇵🇸

🇵🇸 ARTISTS AGAINST APARTHEID! 🇵🇸
🎨 As artists and cultural producers, our work has the power to shape public opinion. Today, as the media wages a war against truth and strips this conflict of its historical context, we have a unique responsibility to use our voice and artistic practices to say NO MORE! Now is the time to protest apartheid and amplify the just cause of the Palestinian people and their resistance against 75 years of occupation. ✊🏽 Artists and cultural workers, join us in standing firmly on the side of the oppressed. We say DOWN WITH OCCUPATION, UP WITH LIBERATION! ✍️ Sign on: peoplesforum.org/againstapartheid

Words won’t be enough to honor the feelings I hold. The people are what make you feel at home and though this will be my first time playing in Beirut, it somehow feels like a homecoming. I’m both humbled and grateful to the friends from Frequent Defect who organized this special night and to my friends who have been pushing for this visit to happen for so long. Immense love your way. ❤️‍🔥 Frequent Defect: Disparate Coercions this SAT 30 Sep w/ Hiro Kone [live] G2D2 [live] aka Sharif Sehnaoui, Anthony Sahyoun, Malek Rizkallah, Akram Hajj Kujo [live] Sandy Chamoun [live] DAO h.w.g.a.
