My letter to Spike Lee,
You did not wait for your opportunity to be a film maker you just started making films. You took your ideas and made a reality so perfect and original that no one had a choice but to pay attention to you.
The character Nola Darling shaped me into the woman I am today. I never saw a women with that much control over her body and relationships until I found her. I was taught that my mind, body, and sexuality were all dirty things that should be hidden. The story of a “Freak” that does not like to be minimized down to a single word or title that discredits their entire personality.
The fact that a man could tell this story and understand it truly touches my heart and inspired my solo exhibition “Hyero’s Gotta Have It” because I’m ready to start my career and not wait for anyone to start it for me.
Spike Lee when you see this. This is your invitation to my show. This is me asking to be a part of your world whether it’s a job, a mentorship, or conversation. And this is a thank you for the impact you have had on my life thus far.
