‘There was a moment of revelation for me when I realised the people I had unconsciously chosen to focus on were marginalised or minorities – whether from a gender, race, religion, socioeconomic or regional perspective, including women, African-Americans, war refugees, gig workers or tribal communities. And in most cases, AI had made their lives harder.’
Code-Dependent: Living in the Shadow of AI by @madhumitav asks what it means to be human in a world that is rapidly changing thanks to the development of artificial intelligence.
‘This is a chilling and essential read about AI and the way it imports and exacerbates existing social inequalities.’ - @profnicolarollock
Spent this past week bringing Code Dependent to three cities across India - including the one where I was born, and the one that was my home. Hard to describe, but will always be among my most special memories: my book and I travelling through Delhi, Bangalore and Bombay, buoyed by the summer sun, and so many well-wishers, benefactors, friends - new and old - and my extended family across the country who came to book signings and live events and bought multiple copies of my book. Fascinating to hear the ideas, anxieties and perspectives on AI from young and old in these cities, and to see how global they are. Special shout-out to my 90-year old grandmother, who travelled 350 miles to watch me on stage in Bangalore. My heart is full. Thank you to each of you - it was a true homecoming. India, there really is no place like you 🇮🇳
Madhumita Murgia’s debut book, shortlisted for the inaugural Women’s Prize in Non-Fiction, maps the growth of Artificial Intelligence through the lens of human actors.
Madhumita Murgia’s Code Dependent lifts the veil hanging over humans that are building the base for AI’s super structure to stand on. Most of them are unaware that the very system they are building would soon gobble up their very livelihood.
Her book offers a cross-section view of tech’s bedrock — labelled data, humans building it, and the influence of automated systems on people. She throws light on the real AI stack, which has humans right at the bottom of the pyramid, without whose inputs, the current crop of AI tech wouldn’t stand.
