Pat Irwin talks about his National Steel guitar The first track that SUSS ever recorded was Wichita and it starts out with this National Steel guitar. It has a uniquely American sound that’s just right for SUSS and it’s on every record we’ve made, including the new one, “Birds & Beasts.” I came to the National Steel by way of Son House whose Death Letter Blues and John The Revelator shook me to the core. This music still moves me. My wife and I just took a road trip through the South to find the places where this music began. We started in Tennessee and then drove across the Mississippi River into Arkansas. We then made our way back into Mississippi and Alabama, down to the Gulf of Mexico, over to New Orleans and up Highway 61, back to Memphis. The “Welcome To Mississippi” sign greeted us with the words, “The Birthplace of American Music.” This is what I was looking for. I wanted to feel this place and see it today.
