This particular shot from the movie "Ponniyin Selvan" posed a significant challenge. It is an emotionally charged scene where it is crucial for all three actors' expressions to be clearly visible and in focus. Trisha, the first actor, is positioned 1.5 feet away from the lens, while Jayam Ravi, the third actor, stands 3 feet away. Vikram, the middle actor, is equidistant at 1.5 feet from both Trisha and Jayam Ravi.
To capture this depth and maintain a soft lighting effect, I employed a tilt-shift lens, aligning the focal plane precisely with the actors' faces. I lit the scene and shot it at an exposure of 22 stops to ensure all three actors remained in focus while achieving the desired depth and softness in the lighting. This particular shot was one of the most technically challenging ones I've ever worked on. It's actually a composite of five different layers. We used 3 motion-controlled shots, in different real locations, 2 in studio with blue screen background. It was a big challenge to match the lighting between all the different locations to make it look like a single seamless shot. To get it just right, we had to shoot over a period of a year and a half. Each layer had to be perfect, and it took a lot of patience and precision. But in the end, all that effort paid off with excellent support from all the members of the technical team and the shot turned out exactly how I envisioned it.
Thanks to the vision and support of @ikamalhaasan sir, @the_ksravikumar sir and Aascar Ravi Chandran sir and the entire technical crews
