“Look at me! I’ve lived!” declares Joe Pernice. Few contemporary American songwriters can do weathered ennui like him, albeit with a nod and a wink. In RC559, the Pernice Brother talks Rob Hughes through nearly three decades of studio output, album by gorgeously sorrowful album. shop.recordcollectormag.com/rc559in (or see link in bio) #pernicebrothers #joepernice #scudmountainboys #thenewmendicants

While many bands of a certain age struggle to balance the desire to keep moving with their audience’s demand to hear the hits, Neil Finn and Crowded House remain as passionate about their back catalogue as they are their latest recorded work. Besides, streaming exposes their songs to new generations and they’re happy to go with the flow. As Finn tells Pete Paphides, in RC559: “You can’t be angry with an algorithm.” shop.recordcollectormag.com/rc559in (or see link in bio) @crowdedhousehq #crowdedhouse #neilfinn

There’s a shimmering, otherwordly quality to The O’Jays’ music, a gossamer lightness to their gospel fervour. It’s there on their hits – Love Train, Put Your Hands Together – and especially on their 1972-3 albums, Back Stabbers and Ship Ahoy, which, argues Philly soul expert Tony Cummings (in RC559), merit contention alongside What’s Going On and There’s A Riot Goin’ On in the annals of conscious R&B… shop.recordcollectormag.com/rc559in (or see link in bio) #theojays #soulmusic #phillysoul #gambleandhuff

Every generation gets the music epoch it deserves – whether that’s psychedelia, glam, punk, new pop, Madchester… In the 90s it was the turn of Britpop. For a period, there was a range of activity under that banner, most notably from the colossally popular likes of Oasis, Blur, Pulp, Supergrass and Elastica, but also from the lesser-known likes of Marion, Menswe@r and My Life Story… In RC559, we reacquaint ourselves with some of Britpop’s stars, we reassess the era’s best albums and the “runners-up”, consider the notable singles and remember the Blur-Oasis rivalry (plus, a hefty Oasis discography)… shop.recordcollectormag.com/rc559in (or see link in bio) #oasis #blur #britpop #pulp #supergrass #elastica

It’s 43 years since Soft Cell’s cover of Gloria Jones’ Tainted Love turned singer Marc Almond and his synth-playing partner Dave Ball into overnight stars, and 42 years since Almond kicked off a solo career that continues to this day. The nervous kid that we first saw on Top Of The Pops on 13 August 1981 is now one of the longest-performing artists of his generation, with his 27th solo album, I’m Not Anyone, about to land. He talks to Joel McIver in RC559… shop.recordcollectormag.com/rc559in (or see link in bio) marcalmondofficial #marcalmond #softcell

Who knew when Group X formed in 1969, that 55 years later the sound of the UK counterculture would still be alive and ritualising onstage and on record as the mighty Hawkwind. Record Collector Presents… Hawkwind explores the band’s incredible musical and social legacy through classic album profiles, eyewitness anecdotes and collector stories with brand new interviews from all current band members including the good Captain, Dave Brock, the true warrior on the edge of time. There’s also a seven-page discography, books, films and memorabilia, a live report from 2024, unseen pix from the band at Disneyland in 1973 – yes, really – and praise from celebrity fans-turned-sonic cosmonauts. In search of space rock? Fire up the Silver Machine and head this way. Record Collector Presents…Hawkwind will be in shops 27 June, but you can pre-order your copy here: shop.recordcollectormag.com/rchawkin (see link in biog - RC Specials) #hawkwind #davebrock #nikturner #lemmy #spacerock #progressiverock #progrock #punkrock #pysch #psychedelicrock #pinkfloyd #blacksabbath #motorhead #ladbrokegrove #spaceritual #silvermachine #michaelmoorcock #stacia #artrock #huwlloydlangton #robertcalvert #barneybubbles #freefestivals #stonehenge #summersolstice #glastonbury #arthurbrown

Overcoming critical derision to sell 130 million albums, Bon Jovi have celebrated their 40th anniversary with a careerspanning documentary series and a return to their trademark feelgood rock after a decade of troubles. In RC559, Jon Bon Jovi, David Bryan and Tico Torres tell John Earls why they refuse to play live again until they’re fully fit, why they’re the people’s choice, their hopes to be reunited with Richie Sambora… and of secret road trips with Bruce Springsteen… shop.recordcollectormag.com/rc559in (or see link in bio) @bonjovi #bonjovi #newjersey #disneyplus #jonbonjovi #davidbryan #ticotorres #thankyougoodnight #brucespringsteen #richiesambora

Welcome to the July 2024 issue of Record Collector (#559 ), in shops 13th June or available here: shop.recordcollectormag.com/rc559in (or see link in bio) This month the cover story takes us back to the early to mid-90s, when Britpop held sway. We speak to some of the stars of the Britpop era, name the best albums and singles, consider the concurrent Britrock and Britdance scenes, relive the Blur vs Oasis wars and meet the new, 2024 wave of Britpoppers. Plus! There’s a hefty Oasis discography, to coincide with the release of the 30th anniversary of Definitely Maybe.. The rest of the issue is far removed from 90s British indie. There’s a fulsome appraisal of Philly soul giants The O’Jays and their Back Stabbers / Ship Ahoy period. Marc Almond is his usual passionate and candid self in The RC Interview. Bon Jovi talk 80s rock and road trips with Bruce Springsteen. Crowded House discuss their new album and the streamable appeal of their back catalogue. Joe Pernice divulges the secrets of his exquisitely sad songwriting. Catherine AD aka The Anchoress is our new columnist. And we review new albums and reissues from David Bowie, Paul McCartney & Wings, Margo Guryan, Linda Thompson, Rusty Egan and his Blitz club vault, John Grant, Dirty Three and more... marcalmondofficial @CrowdedHouseHQ @BonJovi @theanchoressofficial #britpop #oasis #blur #supergrass #pulp #suede #elastica #liamgallagher #noelgallagher #damonalbarn #marcalmond #bonjovi #crowdedhouse #theojays #phillysoul #pernicebrothers #theanchoress

Although her trailblazing work as a singer-songwriter hasn’t enjoyed the attention, or the sales, it deserved, since the late 50s Jackie DeShannon has penned a string of classic songs for other artists across the genres of folk, pop, rock and soul. She even won a Grammy for synth-pop smash Bette Davis Eyes in 1982. Still performing today, at 83, she tells Lois Wilson (in RC559) her versatility as a writer might have been her undoing. shop.recordcollectormag.com/rc558in (or see link in bio) @officialjackiedeshannon #jackiedeshannon #laurelcanyon
