Historic design in downtown Cincinnati, a project for the books!
Excited to share the story of The Historic Mercantile Building, a reimagination of two office buildings and an arcade from different historic time periods into one vibrant multifamily community.
Currently under construction and slated to wrap up very soon, INDIO had the pleasure of designing the brand identity as well as the interior and architecture for several featured spaces throughout the project including the communal hospitality areas, rooftop and unit interiors.

(2/2) Determining your archetype is about identifying and understanding your values. We talk about workplace values all the time, but how we play, relax, and escape is also part of our identity as individuals and a culture.
(1/2) A cozy winter interior for each archetype. From rugged cabins to soothing hot springs, it’s fun to imagine the world of winter from each archetype’s point of view. Which archetype shares your ideal interior when the weather gets cold?
Interior Archetypes
You may have heard of the 12 brand archetypes, which were first outlined by psychologist Carl Jung in the early 20th century. These archetypes are often utilized by branding agencies to help clients get to the core of their company’s values, motivations, and goals by asking them which of the 12 archetypes (The Hero, The Lover, The Explorer, The Ruler…) they most strongly identify with as a company.
As designers who believe the interior design must align with brand, especially when it comes to designing spaces for workplace and hospitality, we’ve been working with these 12 archetypes for years. We have consistently found that assigning archetypes to brands is an invaluable first step to creating a shared understanding of brand values that we can then translate into the design of on-brand spaces. We use archetypes so much in fact, that we developed our own set of archetypes captured in a deck of 12 cards specifically for interior design and architecture clients. We call them our Interior Archetype Cards.

[2/2] Our Interior Archetype Cards are rooted firmly in the historic meanings associated with the 12 archetypes laid out by Carl Jung and expanded upon by branding agencies across the globe. Unlike typical archetype cards or quizzes however, our Interior Archetypes go beyond psychology and brand into the realm that interests us most as interior designers and architects: physical space.
While all archetype exercises ask the question “which archetype are you? (The Caregiver, The Creator, The Outlaw, The Dreamer…), our Interior Archetypes also ask, “in what environment is this archetype at their best?”. Expanding the application of archetypes from personality, voice, and motivation into the physical realms of organization of space, materiality, and aesthetics allows us to create a framework within which all design decisions can be made with purpose and meaning that is authentic to the brand.
So, which archetype is your brand? Are you a disruptive tech OUTLAW changing the world by breaking the rules? Are you a luxury hospitality CAREGIVER pampering your guests with 5-star service? Or are you a DREAMER bringing ideas to life that others can only imagine?
We plan to make our Interior Archetype Cards available soon! If you’re interested, DM us or email hello@indio.design. In the meantime, feel free to reach out about workshops, collabs, or (of course) design projects.
