My grandmothers were two of the most amazing women I’ve ever known.

My paternal grandmother, Margie Osborne Watson, taught first grade for 43 years. She made quilts and fried chicken for people she liked. She gave the gift of literacy to thousands of young people in rural Appalachia. And she always had the most hilarious and insightful comments about @kentuckymbb .

My maternal grandmother, Margaret Lafferty O’Quinn, was tested in ways that few can imagine. She was widowed at a young age — did I mention that she was a mother of nine at the time? Her faith was strong, and so was her determination. She loved all of us so much, and she made the absolute best sausage gravy.
