Back in May, I exhibited outdoors for the first time as part of the #brightonfringefestival with my show ‘Waterworld’ 💦🌍 If you’re familiar with our Great British weather you’ll know going open air was quite the brave/ridiculous choice, but a few showers aside, it worked out perfectly. The paintings hung round the sides of a private outdoor pool tucked away in the heart of Hove and I loved seeing everyones reactions after they walked along the tucked away drive, stepped through the garden gate to view the pool and the paintings. Take a look on stories and you’ll see the short video from the Preview night - art, cocktails and a super time had by all! When I moved from [mostly rainy] Scotland where I studied Fine Art at Glasgow School of Art to [mostly sunny] Brighton, my brother said I’d reached my spiritual home! I’ve had a long love affair with the British seaside since❣️The regency buildings, the fish ’n' chips, the pink fluffy bundles of candy floss and of course, the Gallopers 🎠 It’s kitsch and quirky and quite often, these elements will inspire and appear in my works. In 'There's No Place Like It’ I wanted to add humour with one of the oversized Mr Whippy ice cream cones🍦 And one of my new paintings for LA is called 'Weather Lovely, Food Great!" It’s inspired by the back of a vintage postcard. Many of the subjects of my works wear a weird “crochet mask” 🎭 This came out one night that I was having this visionary idea to combine the crochet decoration and a mask together. The day after my signature mask is born, and became a distinctive element of my personal style. I actually created a series of paper masks to wear, and an acrylic version too! @mariko_koda taking over @theotherartfair account. As you can see, I love to “pimp” found images to transform them completely. I consider myself as a “photo archive parasite, with no bad intentions”. My influences are from many art movements as Dadaism, Surrealism and Pop Art, where conceptual art meets neon colours. Because I have no clue of who the subjects of my pictures are (I use to purchase them online), I try to connect with them putting my life background or experiences in each work.
