Old Pal has been flying free for a month now. I’ve been overwhelmed by the love and support. Thank yall for that. Here’s a few more tidbits about some songs. Cover it with Light: My debut (since the high times in high school) of loosely rapping. I wrote the lyrics to this song after realizing how unkind I could be to my loved ones. Sometimes pursuing an argument when you’re not in the headspace to do so can be so foolish. The voice memo in the middle was taken when I was writing a tune on the mandolin to the effect “It’s time to go, I know”. This became such a cosmic spirit to this song because I’m singing that while the other voice is talking about starry eyed late nights - creating a dystopian contrast. Guess I’m Getting Older: By far the goofiest track of the album. Anyone who knows me knows that I love the video of Richard Sherman going off at Erin Andrews something fierce. I recorded a presumably normal instrumental and for some reason was compelled to add this sample to it. I then wrote an equally compelling chorus to really drive it home. Shine On: This song was just good old fun to make. I’m a massive fan of the Dick Proenneke videos & was able to chop some monologues from his “Alone in the Wilderness” movie into a narrative that reflects what Fool has always meant to me - trying to be the best version of one’s self. I tried to write the most whimsical singy rap thing that I could highlighting some of my favorite pastimes (🍄, 🎲, 🍺, 🤪) & the end is a sample of the fool song from Shiner called “The Day Before Your Last”. Stay true, shine on!

Fool tour was some clean fun. It went off without a hitch, and I have some people to thank for making that happen. To my band - @brleeson @jmoriartymusic & @gabbylawnlegs (@devinmauch in Portland). ❤️❤️ To those who organized & hosted shows - @lakeaffectstudios , @mainecraftdistilling / @waterba.by , @ryan_costellovt , @connartistsconcerts & @theboxnantucket / @packynorton . 🤛🏽👌🏽 If you’re interested in hosting a show in an art gallery, living room, backyard or anywhere your heart desires send me a dm / email! Can’t wait to do it again. For now @nelsonvillefest on Friday, July 26 is the next show! Hope to see Ohio there.

Fun project I dreamed up a bit ago. 1. Finished fretless nylon conversion 2. Original fretted - dark stain neck & fixed bridge 3. Bridge removed & frets pulled 4. Feet slots filled & neck sanded w/ bridge & tailpieces mocked Neck finished with danish oil & a nut cut / setup from @austinrepairs . This thing is so fun & my first real go and messing around with open tuning (d)

The last few features to highlight! “Miscellaneous Ramble” - The first part of this song was one of the first “beats” that I made. When I first got into this style of production I was really going for video game music as the sonic inspo. I sent it to @yeetmiracle at the tail end of the pandemic & she wrote the epic chorus (her voice memo demo-idea ended up being just the vibe it needed, so we never re-recorded what she initially sent back). The part after the drop to organ was the 2nd piece I recorded in my current home studio - “Enjoy the Show” being the first. Similarly to “A Quick Thought” I had 2 pieces in the same key & spliced em together to create one journey. “Lively” takes the cake for oldest piece that made the record. I recorded the instrumental when I lived in Denver & when I moved to Cbus I showed it to @namesbooty one night at Natalie’s Worthington. He wrote and recorded the verse & chorus and then it sat dormant for some time. Flash forward a few years and this record is taking shape. I tracked down the parts that he recorded & gave the tune some extra love. When Tyler recorded it @stinavento added some awesome melodies that I have since chopped and placed around. Lastly, I added the vox melody over his chorus & we had a track. “A Quick Thought” - The first part of this song is one of the oldest recorded pieces that made the record. I believe it was tracked in 2017. I dug it up and had @twominutemile come lay some drums on it for fun before Old Pal was even on the horizon. @evanwestfall and I recorded the second half of the song the day after we recorded “Long Way from Home” - also eons ago. He played the epic picky bass line / drums & I added the guitar. Since then I added more percussion, some samples & sub bass. I realized the two pieces were in the same key, spliced em together and bang!

Old Pal has been out for 2 weeks! Appreciate all the love for it! Here’s pt 1 of short bits about the creation of the songs with features! “Kenny” came to light on a day off in Berkeley, CA on @caamp tour last year. I knew I wanted somebody to rap on it & of course @joeyaich4 was first in mind! He killed this one & we wrote / tracked our respective parts on a high vibes day ending with some pints at the local auto parts store (IYKYK) “No One’s Home” - I made this instrumental on a funky night 🍄when @the.caamp.staand was letting me crash at his spot when I first moved to Columbus. It was meant to be cinematic and when I was constructing Old Pal it made sense for it to be the taste setter. I sampled my favorite Cous song to wrap her up! THANKS YALL!
