:::GUEST POSTS FROM ARTIST/PERFORMER EM ASH THROUGHOUT JULY::: Hi! My name is Emily and I am so excited to be collaborating with Wave Pool for Disability Pride Month. Over the course of July, I’ll be popping in occasionally to talk about topics related to disability and art, and to share further details about my upcoming performance at Welcome on July 26th. A little bit about me: I was born with a condition called Spina Bifida, which affects a number of different aspects of my life, (especially mobility.) I’ve worked at Krohn Conservatory for a couple of years and really enjoy being able to spend my days somewhere so beautiful. I’m a self-described serial hobbyist—some current favorites are handcycling, improv comedy, and sailing. I also have a somewhat extensive musical background and have been singing for as long as I can remember. That’s all for now! Tune in next week for a new post. We have two new classes starting in the Wood Shop next month and there are still seats available (but they typically don't last long!) Here are some more details: Intermediate Woodworking - Wooden Joints Monday evenings starting July 22nd through September 16th (no class Labor Day, September 2nd), 6:30-9 PM. 8 classes total. In each class you will learn how to make a new joint. Some components of these wooden joints will be made by hand, and some using power tools. Every student will learn how to make lap joints, box joints, mortise and tenon, and dovetail joints—just to name a few. Intro to Relief Carving Wednesday evenings starting July 24th through September 11th (8 weeks total) 6:30 - 9 PM. In this class we will learn how to carve an image of your choice into a flat wood surface. This will be a high-relief carving reaching a depth of 1/2 to 1 inch to bring your two-dimensional design into a three-dimensional world. By directly transferring your drawing onto a wooden panel we can begin the carving process. We will learn how to correctly use carving tools and chisels with a mallet to chip, shape and smooth out our chosen design. Expect to come away with a better understanding of a variety of carving techniques and a better sense of three-dimensional space and the shaping of forms. More details and Eventbrite registration information are available at the LINK in our BIO.

Coming to Welcome: Opening Reception June 22nd-Closing Sept 14th Imagining Abolition is an exhibition celebrating solidarity with our inside artists and in appreciation of our outside artists. As a group of currently and formerly incarcerated and exonerated artists, Returning Artists Guild (RAG) approach the work of ending mass incarceration from a variety of lived experiences within the carceral system. They wade through the mire of “criminal justice” and bear the burden of complex trauma. Their work and creative practice hold space for revealing the nature of what they survived and space to dream about a true free future. For this artists collective, abolition is about addressing the facts of the looming prison industrial complex that has not kept us safe, that sends innocent people to death row, that profits off the labor of people in captivity, and that destroys the lives of everyone who encounters it. Abolition is also about doing the work which is why RAG artists come together to share their stories, heal community, and work together to support artists still inside the fences, until they too come home. Exhibiting Artists: Adam Kretchek, Aimee Wissman, Demarlo, Joy, Kamisha Thomas, Mark, Reagan Baruxes, Terri, Todd and Whitney Kretchek.
