Posted @withregram • @mahgem.live [007] Mandong x Kim Dongyong 한자리에 머물지 않고 생동감 있는 에너지를 이루며 앞으로 나아가는 만동의 사운드와 ‘영상을 연주한다’는 표현이 잘 어울리는 김동용의 라이브 비주얼 셋을 마잼라이브mahgem live에서 만나보자. 기타의 함석영, 더블베이스의 송남현, 드럼의 서경수로 이루어진 밴드 만동. 그들의 음악은 자유롭게 방황한다. 마치 확고한 목표를 가지고 나아가는 것이 허무하다는 것을 알고 있는 것처럼. 록과 재즈의 문법, 장르적 경계에 얽매이지 않고 만동(滿動)이라는 이름처럼 세 연주자의 합으로써 꽉 찬 움직임을 만들어낸다. 이번 마잼 라이브에서는 ‘cul de sac’, ‘풀린눈으로 말해요’, 미발매곡인 ‘Home’ 총 세 곡을 들려준다. 펑크밴드 ECE의 프론트퍼슨답게 김동용의 영상 퍼포먼스는 무대에서의 그의 음악적 퍼포먼스를 닮아 매우 신체적이며 즉흥적이다. 재료는 단순한 – 때로는, 리터럴한 – 규칙 안에서 촬영한 단순한 영상이다. 그의 시각셋은 무대가 시작되고 나서야 그 진가를 비로소 발휘한다. 그는 음악가의 예리한 귀로 밴드의 사운드를 분석하고 느끼면서 준비한 영상을 즉흥에서 컨트롤하며 악기처럼 연주한다. 마지막 곡인 ‘Home’에서는 자전거 라이트를 손에 들고 빛과 색, 그림자로 만드는 라이브 퍼포먼스를 보여주면서 시각적 해석을 통해 음악의 정서를 구체화하고 확장한다. Mahgem Live presents the hypnotic and energetic sound of Mandong, along with the expressive visuals of Kim Dongyong. Consisting of guitarist Haam Seokyoung, Double Bassist Song Namhyun, and Drummer Seo Kyungsoo, Mandong skillfully weave their approaches in a synergetic, progressive sound that defies the boundaries of jazz or rock. Their sound forges ahead yet wanders freely, as if it has no intention to settle down with a rigid goal in mind. In this set at Mahgem Live, they perform three songs; “cul de sac,” “Talk, heavy eyes” and an unreleased track, “Home.” As the front person in a punk band, Kim Donyong’s approach to Vjing resembles his musical performance on stage; highly physical and improvisational. He plays visuals like an instrument, responding to and augmenting the band’s sounds with the sharp ears of a musician. His source videos are simple – and sometimes literal – but it is his spontaneity and perceptive attention to the music that adds dimension to his visual play. For the last song ”Home,“ he creates a handmade light show with a bicycle light, visually interpreting and expanding the emotions of the music through light, color, and shadow.
