The World’s Champion Fiddler 🎻🎶 NEW Texas Music History 🚨 This Week - a Panhandle fiddler launches the commercial recording era of country music. On June 30, 1922, Alexander “Eck” Robertson recorded two fiddle tunes for the Victor Talking Machine Company in New York, often considered the very first commercial country recordings. Born in Arkansas, Robertson grew up on a small farm near Vernon, Texas. From a musical family, Robertson began playing his first fiddle at age five, a homemade contraption made of a long-necked gourd and tanned hide. He left home at sixteen to join a traveling medicine show. Robertson and his wife Nettie married in 1906 and performed together in vaudeville theaters and fiddle contests across the Southwest. Robertson, who promoted himself as “The Cowboy Fiddler,” soon began winning at fiddler’s conventions, often facing competitors such as John Wills, the father of the King of Western Swing, Bob Wills. On the contest circuit, Robertson met Henry Gilliland – a fellow fiddler in his mid-seventies who would become Robertson’s musical partner. On a whim, the duo traveled to New York City in 1922 in hopes of making a record. They talked their way into the studio, and Robertson’s outfit playing to New York stereotypes of Texas may have helped—a satin Western shirt with pearl studs, wide-brimmed cowboy hat, and pants tucked into his boots. Robertson would go on to play fiddle for over 80 years, with a career that spanned from country’s very first recordings to performing at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival where Dylan went electric. Robertson passed away in 1975 at 88, his tombstone appropriately inscribed “World’s Champion Fiddler.” Read up on your Texas Music History over at KUTX.org! 🎖️ KUTX is partnering with @centerfortxmusichistory to bring you This Week In Texas Music History. DJ Screw lays down the June 27th Freestyle 🔩💿 NEW Texas Music History 🚨 This Week In Texas Music History - a DIY DJ lays down Houston’s perennial summer soundtrack. 🌇🔥 On June 27, 1996, DJ Screw hit record on what some consider to be his magnum opus, the June 27th freestyle tape. DJ Screw was an auteur and DIY creator, never on a major label, recording in a home studio with groups of artists and friends improvising together. This tape came after midnight on a warm but not scorching Houston summer evening. It was rapper DeMo’s birthday celebration, and he, Big Moe, Key-C, Yungstar, Big Pokey, and Haircut Joe freestyled over a tight, captivating thirty-five minutes. Its iconic stretch featured a slowed-down version of the sampled beat from “Da Streets Ain’t Right” by hip-hop duo Kriss Kross. This was rapper Yungstar’s first full introduction on tape as a member of the Screwed-Up Click, or SUC, DJ Screw’s crew. It also provides a prime example of rapper Big Moe’s distinctive style that brings smooth R&B songcraft into the mix. As Lance Scott Walker wrote in his recent oral history of DJ Screw: “Those guys in the house that night might not have known they’d recorded a hit, but the Houston listening public knew it, and made it so.”  Read the FULL Texas Music History and more about DJ Screw’s legacy over at KUTX.org! 🎖️ KUTX is partnering with @centerfortxmusichistory to bring you This Week In Texas Music History. The Mama of Austin Hip-Hop! 🕶️🔊💽 Kori Roy, AKA Mama Duke, was born and raised in the coastal town of Palacios, Texas. Her mother’s love for Tejano and country music inspired Roy’s love for words and dissecting lyrics for deeper meaning. This led her to writing her own lyrics in high school, though, photography was what led to the Art Institute of Houston. Roy never stopped writing and creating, and she moved to Austin to pursue a music career in 2013. Mama Duke hit the scene running. She immediately linked-up with local graphic artist YellaStud, who pulled Roy into the deep-end of Austin’s hip-hop scene. By her third gig, she was opening up for legendary hip-hop group Naughty By Nature. She released her debut album Ballsy in 2020, depicting her life and experiences as a queer, Black and Mexican woman growing-up in Texas and her experiences of being a queer woman in Austin’s hip-hop scene. Roy’s accomplishments are expansive. She founded the ATX Social Club in 2019, an online platform and general hip hop hub for performers and enthusiasts alike. She made her official SXSW debut in 2021, her ACL Fest debut in 2022, and has received several awards and nominations at both the Austin Hip-Hop Awards and the Austin Music Awards. She’s participated in the prestigious and exclusive Universal Music Publishing Group songwriting camp and now offers her own songwriting masterclass. June is Pride Month, and we’re celebrating all month long by featuring Austin’s Queer Artists of today - and the legends who paves the way! 🏳️‍🌈 This week - @mama.duke ! ❤️‍🔥💯 Find the FULL Mama Duke Pride Feature including Mama’s Studio 1A session over at KUTX.org! 🎖️ #austinpride #pridemonth #mamaduke #austinhiphop #austinmusic #kutx
