I remember from my patchwork and quilting days that when I thought I maybe had too many colours in the quilt I would just add more. And it always worked. So I have carried it through to my paintings. No, it’s not colour! You would think that because my paintings are always painted with vibrant colours that colour makes the biggest impact. But I find that when I compare photos of my work it is actually mark making that seems to be what really draws you in to the artwork. Take a look at paintings that you like. Do you find that it is the little less obvious marks that actually intrigue you to look further? This painting has been on the easel for some weeks now. I am trying to be more patient with my artwork. Focussing on giving layers longer to dry, letting them rest for days and reflecting on them constantly. I think it is proving beneficial. I am really enjoying the results. The best benefit being less muddy colours. How inspired do you get when you have a furniture shuffle around and tidy up of your studio? It’s always inspirational for me, even though I won’t be able to find anything for quite some time after because it has been relocated. 😜 This particular change around has given me a larger area and distance to stand back and view my artwork, which is an incredibly important part of the process. Number 1 /20 in my personal challenge to transform old pieces of artwork on paper cut to 8” square. I’m determined to recycle my out of date paintings in a positive way in an effort to destash my studio somewhat. A daily challenge. So, I went through a stash of (very) old artwork on paper and realised that because they had so many layers of paint on them they would make a great substantial substrate for new artwork. They have no real resemblance to the artwork I produce now, as they go way back. But they are all so varied, both in colours and style. So I cut them all into 8” squares (recycling) and they are about to go through a transformation. One a day. It will be interesting to see what my brain makes of these initial layers and how it responds. I will post one here every day.
