“It always pays to dwell slowly on the beautiful things – the more beautiful the more slowly.” – Atticus I’ve been slowly adding stitch to this earth pigment and soy milk piece taking my time to explore different threads and stitches, concentrating on their position and enjoying the process. I was delighted to hear this week that one of my pieces from the #outofthisearth course was included in the online student exhibition and I’ve continues to experiment and develop the skills and processes introduced by @herquietmaterials in the @fibreartstaketwo course. Although this piece isn’t yet stretched I want to imagine it framed and hanging so used the @artroomsapp to mock up. Often it helps me assess if the piece is complete and I can call it finished. This one is ready for the next stage. Like much of my work it is inspired by landscape. I don’t know what I shall call it yet. Like the stitching this can often take me time to find the right title. Let me know what title you would give it. . . . Earth pigments, soy milk, threads, metal thread on linen. . . #fiberart #earthpigments #outofthisearth #stitch #sustainableart #naturalmaterialsart

Don’t you love sharing your artistic skills? As part of my open studio event today I delivered an oak gall ink making workshop. We had so much fun processing the ink and mark making that I forgot to take more photos! The students took home packs at the end of the workshop which included a booklet with information about the history of the ink and a recipe with some galls to make more ink once they have finished using the ink they made as part of the workshop. It was great to share my enthusiasm and encourage them to test the ink out with different tools including natural materials on various papers. #saos @surreyartistopenstudios #artworkshop #becreative #oakgallink #inspirebydoing #inspiredbytrees #inthestudio

Shapes and lines. I’ve added stitch to this earth pigment and soya milk on linen piece. It took sometime as it’s been awhile since I did much needlework but I love the how the subtle texture made by the threads and how they have enhanced the piece. I used grains of risotto rice to resist the pigment as it sunk through the linen fibres to create small almost pebbles like shapes. This is another piece that has been inspired by the course #outofthisearth I took earlier this year through @fibreartstaketwo with the tutor @herquietmaterials . A fabulous course using all sustainable materials and new techniques. Again I’ve imagined it using the #artroomsapp trying out settings and frames. #fibreart #earthpigments #contemporyart #naturalmaterials #sustainableart

After the last few weeks being busy with curations of exhibitions, sorting out framing for works and invigilating, I’ve finally got round to adding stitch to one of my pigment and soya milk pieces. This one is called “A Thin Place”. It is yet to be framed but I wanted to try it in this mock up app #artroomsapp to see how I might display it. “Thin Places” is a Celtic term for those spaces and moments where the distance between heaven and earth seem almost nonexistent. An example of a thin place in England is Lindisfarne, but there are others scattered around the uk and beyond. I don’t think it matters if you believe in heaven or not. I think we all have places that have a special or spiritual meaning and connection for us. For me the view from Richmond hill down over the River Thames has special meaning, as does the view from Box Hill at dusk. Let me know one of your thin places in the comments below. #contemporaryart #minimalistart #minimalisthome #fibreart #thinplaces #celticculture #earthpigments

What a surprise! I’ve been exploring applying pigment with soya milk to linen. It’s been interesting painting the colour onto the surface of the fabric and anticipating how the pigment will sink into the fibres. Here is the piece from my last post showing the reverse side. The green is very subtle and you get a sense of the fibres from the twine. ❓ Which side do you prefer? I’d love to know your thoughts. The next step will be to decide which side I want to work with and develop. What the surface evokes and materials to add to the piece. I’m enjoying the slow process of this project. I find myself just looking at the fabrics and quietly beginning the creative conversation. #dothe100dayproject2024 @fibreartstaketwo @herquietmaterials #fabricart #naturalpigments #wipart #inthestudio #sustainableart

Day 53-54 WIP #dothe100dayproject2024 Continuing to explore earth pigments and soya on linen. I’ve layered Indian black and ancient green earth. Under the linen I’ve placed lengths of course twine to see what effect it will make as the pigments sinks through the fabric. I’m wondering if they will be bold or subtle. At the moment I like the ridges that have formed as the linen dries. I’m also thinking where I will take this piece next. Thank you @herquietmaterials and @fibreartstaketwo for this amazing course. I’m learning so much as I explore this new process. #soyart #earthpigmentspainting #inspiredbynature #abstractart #fibreart #inthestudio
